A collection of 22 anagrams of challenging vocabulary to use as lesson starters. Each slide includes the definition of the word, an example and some synonyms. Could be used in English or even in form/tutor time as a wider literacy initiative.

Includes teacher notes for themes and wider reading links, an activity sheet for evaluation the ending (GCSE Paper 1 style) and an exam style question 2 (Eng Lan). The Color Purple: Characterisation

(0)
A PowerPoint introducing a 'character project' for 'The Color Purple' . An outline of each character is provided and a list of criteria to include in a presentation. Comparisons with 'A Streetcar Named Desire' are included, but these could be easily deleted or replaced with your own comparative text. (Created with AQA A Level Specification in mind).
The Color Purple: Context

The Color Purple: Context

(0)
An informative PowerPoint presentation, which offers an overview of the factors, both historical and personal, influencing Walker's writing of the novel. To keep the slides student-friendly, there is additional information on the notes section to supplement teaching and to encourage students to make notes. Includes some suggestions for further research and reading. Some discussion tasks, but largely informative. Created for AQA English Literature at A Level, but includes no specific references to Assessment Objectives etc. so versatile enough for different specs/exam boards.
Comparing Prose and Poetry AQA A Level English Literature

Comparing Prose and Poetry AQA A Level English Literature

(0)
A selection of 8 possible examination questions with a carousel activity focused on students planning responses with the Assessment Objectives in mind. The title page refers to 'Rebecca' and the 'Pre-19th Century Poetry', but these questions would work with any of the Love Through the Ages texts and would be easily tweaked.
The Color Purple: Key Letters

The Color Purple: Key Letters

(0)
A carousel activity aimed to take a lesson of 1 hour. Using key letters, students answer a range of questions to annotate some of the key moments from the novel. The questions are focused on the Assessment Objectives for AQA A Level English Literature: Paper 2B: Texts in Shared Contexts: Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day (Drama and Prose Contextual Linking) Some comparisons are made with 'A Streetcar Name Desire', but these could be easily edited to the play of your choice. (The letters aren't included, I photocopied the extracts from the novel onto A3 for my classes). You could repeat the activity with different letters.
Writing a Book Review

Writing a Book Review

(0)
PowerPoint format to save on photocopying, this presentation takes your class through writing a review in stages, with opportunities for discussion and for class interaction. Probably a 30-45minute task, depending on the enthusiasm of your class. A handy first lesson after the holidays lesson for key stage 2/3, or for days that celebrate books and reading as a one off lesson.
Modern Novel Display

Modern Novel Display

(0)
A selection of quotes from a range of modern novels, presented for display. I've used PowerPoint as it is the most user friendly to print without interfering with format/font etc. (just print whole page slides) The resource has 11 slides, so 11 pieces of A4 in colour for display. Many quotes link well to love and loss, so might make a good stimulus for A Level English Literature. Novels include: Stay With Me, The Go Between, The Miniaturist, The Way I Left Her, The Invention of Wings, The Secret Life of Bees, The Glorious Heresies.
AQA Drama and Prose Contextual Linking Question

AQA Drama and Prose Contextual Linking Question

(0)
Created for A-level ENGLISH LITERATURE A (7712/2B) Paper 2B: Texts in Shared Contexts: Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day , Option 1, this is an example modern unseen extract taken from Carter's 'The Magic Toyshop' and includes a question on the extract itself, and the follow up question where students need to compare prose and drama. Could be tweaked for the other options on the paper. The extract is a little longer than students would be given in an exam, but I will be using it as a tool to teach Magic Realism in the modern novel. You may also like my resource 'Male Dominance in A Streetcar Named Desire and The Color Purple', which takes students through the approach to the second question on this paper.

Male dominance in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' and 'The Color Purple'

(0)
A detailed presentation taking students through comparison of key areas in both texts, which prepares them to answer a sample question on male dominance. (AQA ENGLISH LITERATURE A (7712/2B) Paper 2B: Texts in Shared Contexts: Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day) Includes detailed teacher notes to supplement the information on the slides. Also includes discussion tasks to prevent it being too 'chalk and talk'. You may also like my AQA Drama and Prose Contextual Linking resource, which provides an unseen extract from Carter's 'The Magic Toyshop' and focuses on male dominance. (The sister question to this one on the exam paper).

Isolation: The Color Purple and A Streetcar Named Desire

(0)
A PowerPoint introducing the comparison question for AQA A Level English Literature (Modern times: Literature from 1945 to the present day). The question focus is Isolation and the resource prompts discussion and independent thought. I have included in the notes section suggestions for directing the discussions. Includes group activity task and should prepare students nicely for answering the sample examination question.
Exploring the Context of 'Rebecca'
misswright2misswright2

Exploring the Context of 'Rebecca'

(0)
A PowerPoint presentation designed for the new AQA English Literature at A Level. Information about the novel’s background is provided, links to wider reading and a group/independent task is included too, to provide a varied couple of lessons. It will take me 3 x 1 hour lessons with mixed ability year 12, including an hour for them to work together to make their own links (with guided questions). There are some references to comparison with the poetry, these could easily be replaced with whatever text you are comparing with. If you like this, see my other resources on ‘Rebecca’ too!
A Midsummer Night's Dream - Who loves who?

A Midsummer Night's Dream - Who loves who?

To use just as a PowerPoint, or to print as worksheets to use alongside the PowerPoint, this resource visually presents the changing nature of the relationships during the course of the play. I use as an ongoing resource alongside the teaching of the play. A good plenary for the end of each act. Suitable for Key Stage 3
A Midsummer Night's Dream: Act 3 Scene 2

A Midsummer Night's Dream: Act 3 Scene 2

(0)
A PowerPoint taking students through this important scene. It includes a number of activities including drama tasks, language analysis tasks, creative writing, a chat show and a storyboarding activity. Should keep them busy for a while! I use this with mixed ability year 8 classes, but it might work for lower ability ks4 ( though you might miss some of the tasks out/adapt them).
The Scrutiny - Richard Lovelace
misswright2misswright2

The Scrutiny - Richard Lovelace

(0)
A PowerPoint presentation designed to take students through analysing the poem independently/in pairs. Questions are focused on the AOs for AQA’s A Level English Literature paper 7711 7712. I’ve included a couple of comparison questions for ‘Rebecca’, but not many and these could easily be adapted for the text you are using as the comparison piece. The focus is on the poem itself, rather than on the novel.
Thematic Comparisons: A Streetcar Named Desire and The Color Purple

Thematic Comparisons: A Streetcar Named Desire and The Color Purple

(0)
Designed specifically for AQA A Level English Literature, Modern times: Literature from 1945 to the present day, this resource offers four short extracts from unseen modern texts followed by tasks based on critical views of Walker’s The Color Purple and Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire . Four practice questions included. Could be used as a discussion PowerPoint or as a group activity, using the slides as worksheets. I’m using it with my Year 13s as a revision activity, leading up to them writing responses to the questions included.
Macbeth Pre-reading Lesson
misswright2misswright2

Macbeth Pre-reading Lesson

(0)
A great pre-reading activity based on Macbeth. Students simulate being in a police investigation and try to uncover the identity of a missing woman based on the things she has said and done. (It’s Lady Macbeth). Students work in groups, in role, which makes for an excellent speaking and listening activity, as well as a great introduction to the play. (It works best when you’ve not done anything with them on the play).
