A worksheet style resource, which includes a table with detailed comparative analysis of Du Maurier’s ‘Rebecca’ with Blake’s ‘The Garden of Love’ and Keats’s ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’. The table is followed up with a task which prompts students to do the same thing with the remaining poems. (I’ve not included the two Hardy poems as I don’t think they’re great together, but you could differentiate by getting weaker students to just compare with one Hardy poem at a time in a similar fashion. The extract is a little longer than students would be given in an exam, but I will be using it as a tool to teach Magic Realism in the modern novel. Probably a 30-45minute task, depending on the enthusiasm of your class. A handy first lesson after the holidays lesson for key stage 2/3, or for days that celebrate books and reading as a one off lesson.

Using the events from the opening of Pullman's novel, the activity gets students to consider newspaper articles taken from 1872 in terms of language and style. It leads to a creative piece, where students create their own newspaper. An hour long lesson.
