The population genetics power point covers the mechanisms of how species evolve over time. It begins with an overview of Hardy-Weinberg and then delves into genetic flow, genetic drift, bottleneck effect, founder's effect, the types of selection, the types of isolation and the types of speciation.
The power point is filled with examples of the mechanisms and pictures, graphs and charts to help emphasize the concepts.
The concepts are heavy within population genetics so I would advise to chunk the information up into segments instead of teaching them all the way through in one day.
Two student guiding graphic organizer fold out foldables. The first focuses on the cell cycle and mitosis. The second focuses on meiosis. There is also a free venn diagram included to help students organize their thoughts on the differences between mitosis and meiosis. Teacher keys for both foldables included.
Cell Cycle and Mitosis Graphic Organizer:
The foldable covers cell cycle, G0, G1, S, G2, and mitosis in both animal and plant cells. There are note taking areas for how mitosis is the driving force behind growth, development, regeneration and asexual reproduction. The foldable also covers tumors both benign and malignant (cancer).
Meiosis Graphic Organizer:
This graphic organizer fold out foldable first prompts the students to define vocabulary specific to meiosis. Next the students go over crossing over using terms such as sister chromatids, homologous chromosomes, synapsis, tetrad, chiasmata. If you teach AP Biology it is great for review.
The detailed meiotic steps also discuss what is happening with the quantity of genetic material and each phase of meiosis is detailed.
A new twist on lab safety and equipment review. Many times we repeat the same lab safety and equipment reviews every year. Make it fun with this Lab Safety and Equipment Memory game. The students will need to match 25 pairs of cards. One card has a description and the students need to match it with a picture or explanation. The game allows the students to continuously review lab safety and equipment while having fun and being competitive.
The cards are square and saved as a pdf. By adjusting your page count per printed page you can adjust the size of your cards. I suggest laminating them and keeping them year after year. I use one set per lab table. You can have the students compete within a single table or between groups.
Viruses often boggle young students' minds. They are not living so can not be called dead. This power point goes over the reasons viruses are not categorized as living, explains their methods for reproduction, the lytic and lysogenic cycles.
HIV reproduction in the human body is covered in detail along with the five drugs used in its treatment.
There are a few slides dedicated to Ebola / Marburg, why they are hard to find and how the primate population of the world is being affected.
The latest Zika virus is also presented and why it is detrimental to developing babies in the womb.
Multiple common viruses are also displayed and discussed. Students will be able to distinguish viruses from living things and understand their methods of reproduction. Students will also be able to identify viruses based on their structure. Students will also understand that viruses infect all forms of life.
Excellent bundle for working on dichotomous keys, reviewing dichotomous keys, researching or especially for end of the year activities which keep the students entertained following the AP Biology exam or standardized state testing. This is also a great summer school activity which will take a couple of days for completion.
Cryptozoology Dichotomous Key: Monsters, Spooks, and Ghouls
The students will be entertained with taxonomy over monsters, beasts, mythological creatures and strange diseases. This dichotomous key is a mixture of reality and myth. Students are given 25 organisms they need to identify. I also included two suggestions for extension activities.
I usually use this as a cooperative lesson with my students paired up so they can work the dichotomous key together.
This activity can be used in its power point format to upload to a classroom website and have the students use laptops or iPads to go through the pictures with their dichotomous key and answer sheet in hand. Displaying the pictures of organisms in a power point allows for students to see more details without the loss of clarity that happens so often with photocopied dichotomous keys.
As an instructor you may choose to use the power point for whole class instruction and work through the dichotomous key with all your students participating. This works well with smaller classes, tutoring sessions or as an enrichment activity for the gifted population.
If you do not have a class website or technology for you students you can still use this dichotomous key successfully. The slides can be printed out as task cards. I have placed little centers around the room and had the students move from center to center classifying the organisms. I like this activity because it keeps my hyper students in constant motion. Laminating the cards will give you years of use.
An additional option is to simply print a few slides per page. If you are using color copies you would only need 10-1 sets and have the students work cooperatively. The students do not really need to write on anything except for the answer sheet.
Cryptozoology Student Research Power Point Presentations
Students will each be given a cryptid to research. Cryptids such as Big Foot, the Chupacabra and mermaids can all be easily researched online or through a smart device. Have the students decide whether they believe in it's existence or why they do not. your students must use scientific data to prove or disprove their existence. They must present their finding in an organized well designed power point and be enthusiastic in the presentation.
This bundle includes a list of cryptids, a student question worksheet to help springboard their research and an editable rubric for your grading ease.
The power point covers cell cycle, G0, G1, S, G2, and mitosis. There are slides for chromosomes, how mitosis is the driving force behind growth, development, regeneration and asexual reproduction. The power point also presents cancer and other disease causes by disrupted cell cycles.
This is the power point, dichotomous key, answer sheet and answer key which covers desert plants. A variety of desert trees, cactus, wildflowers and landscaping specimens are included. I usually use this in class with my students paired up so they can work the dichotomous key together. Its an excellent activity for students who are not familiar with the desert ecosystem.

The plant kingdom power point covers plant characteristics such as cell type in adults, alternation of generation, vascular tissues, male and female gametes, flowers, root systems and geographic locations.
The major plant clades are covered in order of how they most likely evolved or complexity. Mosses, Liverworts, Hornworts & Bryophytes, Ferns, Gymnosperms: Conifers, Cycads, Gingkoes, Angiosperms. A two page plant kingdom chart goes along with the power point and an answer key of the chart filled out. This lesson can take about two class periods, possibly three depending on how long your classes are.
Great Dichotomous Key on Botanicals. There are Carnivorous, Poisonous and just curious plants in this collection which spans the world.
This activity can be used in its power point format to upload to a classroom website and have the students use laptops or iPads to go through the pictures.
You could use the power point for whole class instruction and work through the dichotomous key will all the students participating.
If you do not have a class website / laptops or iPads you could print the slides out and use them as task cards set up in small groups around your class like centers.
You could also print out handouts with a few slides on each page for the students to use.
This activity has quite a few different ways it can be implemented into your classroom.
The dichotomous key with two different answer sheet forms and key. There is a student sheet and extension suggestions.
Great lesson for after state testing or when the kids get antsy before a holiday break!
Classifying Organisms is a power point for students to classify organisms into the domains and kingdoms. I have also included viruses. There are thirty slides with pictures and a few clues. Students are to decide whether the organism belongs to Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Plantae, Animalia, Fungus or Protista. Some of the slides may be Viruses. This is a great lesson to encourage academic discussions. The students can work in partners and the teacher is simply the facilitator.
Genetic Disorders goes over the DNA mutations and couples each of them with a disease that people are affected by. Point mutation frame shift mutation, chromosomal mutations and sex-linked mutations are all included. Diseases like sickle cell anemia, albinism and others are also discussed. Excellent for AP Biology and Genetics.
This power point question set has 25 slides where the students need to figure out what level of life is being described. Students can choose biomolecules, organelles, cells, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem, or biosphere for their answers. It is a great way to get the students talking about what they learned in class and applying it to real life examples. I have the answer sheet and answer key included.
You can show the power point to the whole class or upload it to your classroom website and allow the students to work individually or pairs . Another option is to print the slides and have stations set up around the room for the students to visit and answer.
This power point has 16 symbiotic scenarios. The students are to read each slide and analyze the pictures in order to choose which symbiotic level is depicted. The fours symbiotic relationships presented are endosymbiosis, commensalism, predation, parasitism and mutualism. I usually have my students work with a partner. It is a lot of fun to hear them talk about each situation using educational dialogue. This is an excellent follow up activity after the Symbiosis Power point to make sure the students understand the difference relationships.
This power point presentation can be done over a few days. It begins with the atom, chemical bonding and the elements of life (CHNOPS). Then it goes over dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis followed by the four biomolecule groups: carbohydrates, lipids, protein, nucleic acids.
Plants Special topics describe plant adaptations, tropisms and hormones. The adaptations section goes over the specialized leaves, stems and protective adaptations. The tropisms cover how plants respond to water, light, tough and gravity. The various hormones are described in terms of how they affect the plants, fruit and leaves during various times of year.
Gene Regulation can be one of the most confusing concepts to teach secondary science, AP Biology and college level biology classes.

The Taxonomy Kingdom Classification Chart is great to use for virtual distance learning, hybrid, or in-person traditional classrooms. The chart / graphic organizer is for students to fill in the characteristics of viruses, Eubacteria, Archaebacteria, protists, animals, plants, and fungus. The chart is supplied in two formats, a one-page chart which is easy for digital application and a 2-page version which is easy to print on paper. Both can be used in a digital and traditional setting.
The chart requires students to answer if the organism kingdoms are living, their genetic material, the organelles, how they reproduce, food chain levels, and there are sample pictures as well.
Formatted for easy insertion into Composition Notebooks or Interactive Notebooks. You can also print out to use as worksheet, or use online as a digital worksheet. The digital chart is a fillable pdf form. Applications such as Adobe Acrobat, Lumen or Kami can be used to fill out the pdf.
This chart goes well with the Taxonomy Classification PowerPoint. Students can fill it out while viewing the PowerPoint. The chart can also be used as a webquest or a textbook activity. It is very versatile.
The virus column is for comparative purposes so students can see how different viruses are from living organisms.
Cell membrane graphic organizer foldable and power point go over the main function of the cell membrane and its components such as phospholipids, peripheral proteins, gylcocalyx, integral proteins, bi-lipid layer, and cholesterol. Only one sheet of paper is required.
Students will also assemble a cell membrane in the center of the foldable. They will color, cut out and glue the cell membrane components unto a phospholipid bi-layer after they finish drawing the missing phospholipids.
