PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
It is important to promote writing across the disciplines. Sometimes it is difficult to come up with writing prompts. These task cards are specific to secondary science and they cover Genetic disorders and mutations. The questions cover DNA mutations, diseases, causes of mutations, and evolutionary impact of mutations.
This activity can be used as a bell ringer, pop quiz or closing. It is a good exercise to make the brief students write longer and the novel writers write shorter answers.
There are 32 writing prompts with instructions as to how many sentences they should write. You can adjust the pages per sheet setting to print multiple cards per sheets of paper.
This activity is a great follow up to Genetic Disorders: Mistakes in the DNA code, DNA mutations Power Point and Worksheets
It is important to promote writing across the disciplines. Sometimes it is difficult to come up with writing prompts. These task cards are specific to secondary science and they cover the Plant Kingdom. The topics covered range from the plant structures, clades, hormones, tropisms and even plant cells.
This activity can be used as a bell ringer, pop quiz or closing. It is a good exercise to make the brief students write longer and the novel writers write shorter answers.
There are 36 writing prompts with instructions as to how many sentences they should write. You can adjust the pages per sheet setting to print multiple cards per sheets of paper.
Print in gray-scale to maintain detail if you are not printing in color. It looks great both ways!
This Plant Kingdom has two plant kingdom power points. One goes over the anatomy and traits of plants, then covers each plant clade (group) individually and their characteristics,. The plant clades or sequenced in evolutionary order and there is a chart included for the students to fill out while covering the power point. The plant clades are mosses, ferns, gymnosperms: conifers, gingkos, cycads, and angiosperms. The second power point goes over special topics in plants such as tropisms and adaptations.
There is a third power point called Plant questions, you can do these as a whole class or upload them to a website so students can work on the questions individually or in pairs. There is one plant question per slide and they all have photographs or diagrams to help the students answer correctly. The last file is a set of writing task cards which covers all the plant information.
I also have these items listed separately but you save purchasing as a bundle.
Printing in grayscale will ensure maximum detail if you are not printing in color.
This is a bundle of Genetic disorders and mutations. You will receive a power point presentation with follow along worksheets and answer key. There are writing task cards and three sets of problem sets. In one set the students will model DNA mutations. The other two sets center around karyotype analysis.
This bundle includes:
Genetic Disorders: Mistakes in the DNA code, DNA mutations Power Point
Genetic Disorders: Mistakes in the DNA code, DNA mutations Worksheets w/t Key
Genetic Mutations: DNA Mutations Writing Task Cards Secondary Science
Mutations in DNA: Single strand DNA mutations Problem Set
Genetic Disorders / Mutations: Karyotype Problem Sets Worksheets
Printing in grayscale will ensure maximum detail if you are not printing in color.
The plant kingdom power point covers plant characteristics such as cell type in adults, alternation of generation, vascular tissues, male and female gametes, flowers, root systems and geographic locations.
The major plant clades are covered in order of how they most likely evolved or complexity. Mosses, Liverworts, Hornworts & Bryophytes, Ferns, Gymnosperms: Conifers, Cycads, Gingkoes, Angiosperms. A two page plant kingdom chart goes along with the power point and an answer key of the chart filled out. This lesson can take about two class periods, possibly three depending on how long your classes are.

I have bundled two versions of this genetic disorders worksheets. They both cover the same chromosomal diseases but one is short answer and the other asks the students to describe the disease symptoms.
In both sets the students are given 8 karyotypes that they need to identify by gender and figure out what chromosomal abnormalities are in each.
The students can then take that information and research it online or at a library to find the syndrome's name and symptoms (long answer set). The teacher key is included for both.
The students worksheets are five pages long since they include an introduction in each set. The teacher keys are four pages long for each set.

This is a problem set which follows a lesson covering genetic disorders and mutations. The students will model deletion, insertion, inversion and duplication mutations on single strands of DNA and explain how the mutations affect the polypeptide chain. There are two free styles of codon charts and the teacher key are included.
This problem set is a great follow up to

Genetic Disorders goes over the DNA mutations and couples each of them with a disease that people are affected by. Point mutation frame shift mutation, chromosomal mutations and sex-linked mutations are all included. Diseases like sickle cell anemia, albinism and others are also discussed. Excellent for AP Biology and Genetics.

Biology TEKs:
(4) Science concepts. The student knows that cells are the basic structures of all living things with specialized parts that perform specific functions and that viruses are different from cells. The student is expected to:
(A) compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells;
(B) investigate and explain cellular processes, including homeostasis, energy conversions, transport of molecules, and synthesis of new molecules; and
(C) compare the structures of viruses to cells, describe viral reproduction, and describe the role of viruses in causing diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and influenza.
(5) Science concepts. The student knows how an organism grows and the importance of cell differentiation. The student is expected to:
(A) describe the stages of the cell cycle, including deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) replication and mitosis, and the importance of the cell cycle to the growth of organisms;
(B) examine specialized cells, including roots, stems, and leaves of plants; and animal cells such as blood, muscle, and epithelium;
(C) describe the roles of DNA, ribonucleic acid (RNA), and environmental factors in cell differentiation; and
(D) recognize that disruptions of the cell cycle lead to diseases such as cancer.
Next Generation Science Standards:
A new twist on a dimensional analysis (factor/ label method). This activity is for after you have taught dimensional analysis. Students need to apply the skills they learned to see if they can escape in time to avoid the incoming zombies.
You can have the students compete individually or in groups and which ever individual or group gets the six problems correctly answered first is the winner.
There is a worksheet for the students, a Zombie Survival Fact sheet with some conversions. The students will need to use the information given to make their own conversion statements.
I have included a teachers key with equivalency statements and how to solve the problems step by step.
Student worksheet (3 pages)
Zombie Key (1 page)
Teacher Key (3 pages)
Test your students understand of homeostasis with this ten question quiz. Students need to write what the body needs to regulate or is trying to regulate and what type of feedback mechanism it is.
Homeostasis Bundle includes a power point, chart, worksheets and answer key. Topics covered include negative and positive feedback. Examples such as blood sugar, body temperature, stress, labor and delivery and blood clotting are also covered.
Homeostasis worksheets with answer key go over negative and positive feedback. Examples such as blood sugar, body temperature, stress, labor & delivery and blood clotting are covered.
These prokaryotic bacteria worksheets cover Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, bacteria shapes, structures, cluster type gram staining, reproduction, pasteurization, sterilization, and antibiotic resistance. There are also examples of specific bacteria. Pathogenic and beneficial bacteria are covered. You can also purchase a power point to accompany the worksheets separately.

This is a black and white memory game focused on cells. Students need to match the picture and word with the definition.
Cell organelles, states of osmosis, four eukaryotic kingdoms, two prokaryotic kingdoms and specialized cells are covered. There are 42 pairs for a total of 84 cards. You can make smaller games to best suit your class needs.
It can also be used to make studying flashcards.
The cards are square and saved as a pdf. By adjusting your page count per printed page you can adjust the size of your cards. I suggest laminating them and keeping them year after year. I use one set per lab table. So I printed 7 sets. You can have the students compete within a single table or between groups.
