Energy and the Electromagnetic Spectrum Power Point

(0)
The power point covers the electromagnetic spectrum, light, photons, waves and their characteristics. the relationship between frequency, wavelength, and the speed of light are introduced with the formula for speed of light. Calculating the energy of the electromagnetic waves is also covered with introduction to Planck's constant and the energy formula derived using the constant. How we see light is presented along with slides for each type of electromagnetic ray and how they can affect human health. I also have a slide on cosmic rays since they have the most energy of all electromagnetic rays.

Astronomy Ornament Activity (Write, Color, Cut, Glue, Assemble)

(0)
Astronomy Ornament Activity is a fun fine motor skills activity designed for older students to have an opportunity to create a papercraft while using their fine motor skills, through writing, coloring, cutting, gluing, and assembly. There are fifteen celestial objects including an astronaut. The ornaments have a front and back. The front of the ornament is a rendering of the celestial body. The back of the ornament has questions about the astronomy element that students can answer using their books or a quick internet search. Students will color the ornaments’ fronts and backs, cut the ornaments out, and assemble them. Students can glue the fronts and back together. Another option is using cardstock between the two layers for added structural support. I am sure there are multiple other options that you and your students can come up with. These are also fun classroom decorations to hang up. I have hung some of mine from the ceiling and the students enjoy looking at them. Instructions are included as a PowerPoint presentation or pdf file.

Lab Safety and Equipment Memory Game Classic B&W version

A new twist on lab safety and equipment review. Many times we repeat the same lab safety and equipment reviews every year. Make it fun with this Lab Safety and Equipment Memory game. The students will need to match 25 pairs of cards. One card has a description and the students need to match it with a picture or explanation. The game allows the students to continuously review lab safety and equipment while having fun and being competitive. The cards are square and saved as a pdf. By adjusting your page count per printed page you can adjust the size of your cards. I suggest laminating them and keeping them year after year. I use one set per lab table. You can have the students compete within a single table or between groups.

The History of Atomic Theory, Atomic Structure, Isotopes and Atomic Mass are presented in three different sections of this power point with. You can see the different sections by the change in colors. You will go through the scientists and experiments which contributed to the synthesis of the Atomic theory. The next section will go over the parts of the atom. The last section will review isotopes and atomic mass. Students will also learn how the masses on the Periodic Table where calculated. The Atom Fold-Out Foldable is designed for secondary science courses. The anatomy of the atom is covered including valence electrons, energy levels, isotopes and ions. The Bohr diagram and Lewis Dot structure are reviewed. Students will also see what happens to an atom when the number of protons, neutrons and electrons are changed. I have included assembly instructions which is extremely simple and the teacher's key.

Electromagnetic Spectrum and Energy Power Point The power point covers the electromagnetic spectrum, light, photons, waves and their characteristics. the relationship between frequency, wavelength, and the speed of light are introduced with the formula for speed of light. Electromagnetic Spectrum Graphic Organizer (with energy and light formulas) The fold-out foldable covers the electromagnetic spectrum, light, photons, waves and their characteristics. The relationship between frequency, wavelength, and the speed of light are introduced with the formula for speed of light. Calculating the energy of the electromagnetic waves is also covered with introduction to Planck's constant and the energy formula derived using the constant. Electromagnetic Spectrum: Eight Types of Waves 1 pg Foldable This one page foldable has eight flaps for a description of radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma and cosmic rays. There are illustrations, instructions and a key included. Visible Light Spectrum: Speed of Light, Planck's Constant, Energy of Light In this worksheet students will use a visible light spectrum chart to calculate the wavelength of different colors of light. Then using the light equation and speed of light the students will figure out the frequency for each color. In the next step, students will use the frequency and Planck's constant in order to calculate the energy each color of light carries. Students will also need to color the spectrum. I have mine work out their calculations on a separate sheet of notebook paper and turn it in attached to their charts. I have included an answer sheet so you can see what the final should look like. For my younger students I give them the color wavelengths. For my physics students I have them use the chart and figure the wavelengths out on their own. I use this in both Chemistry and Physics.

ACTIVITY The students will be organizing good and evil characters from pop culture. This is a Periodic Activity to allow students to experience and simulate what it is like to organize a group of subjects based on properties. This is an excellent Halloween activity for secondary science! Some of the properties have periodic trends, while other do not. Students will be organizing good and evil pop culture characters based on their Altruistic score, Malicious score, Fatality score, Jovial score and Intellect score. There are other properties the students can use as well by analyzing the character tiles. There are a total of 63 character tiles. Student need to use ALL 63.
