We start by discussing the different types of social changes that exist before looking at some informative graphs and charts to contextualise understanding. A short exam style question before going on technological changes, again discussion of real life examples for context and a short question. Some true or false questions as a mini plenary and debate.
In the second powerpoint, we focus on corporate social responsibility, lots of real life examples. case studies, videos to help students understand the extent to which businesses are socially responsible (or not) i.e Apple and Primark’s suppliers and tax avoidance by many firms.
We also have a case study on shareholders vs stakeholders, students prepare arguments to present back to the class on whether the firm should aim to satisfy shareholders or stakeholders, this can be answered as a 24 mark exam style question with a peer assessment grid to follow.

This double lesson introduces learners to the reality of business - that strategies fail at times. We start by looking at the decision making process of developing a strategy and identify reasons where failure can be rooted from in this process. We then look at the difference between a planned and emergent strategy as well as strategic drift. A video of real life business examples that drifted away from the environment such as Nokia and Kodak. We look at the divorce between ownership and control and the impact this can have on a businesses strategy. We look at the subjective nature of ‘success’ when evaluating the performance of a strategy. Importance of contingency plans, some true or false questions, research task, debate, box plenary and a kahoot quiz on topics from all of year 2 for the final lesson! Enjoy!

We focus on Porter’s five forces by starting with a video outlining the model, then some slides to consolidate the theory on this interesting tool to analyse influences on an industry. A case study on Tesco’s buyer power is looked at before students attempt to carry out a Porter’s five forces analysis on the smartphone industry, this could be carried out as a group activity and findings presented back to class.
In the second lesson, we look at a case study which we previously looked at in year 1 (3.1.3) on the gaming market, now that students have studied the external environment in thorough detail in year 2, we attempt this again. Model answer and peer assessment grid provided, debate question, videos, case studies, kahoot quiz and a box plenary to finish with.
As we come to the end of external influences, some slides at the end to remind students that PESTLE and SWOT are also useful tools to analyse external influences on businesses together with Porter’s five forces.

Learners are introduced to mission statements and how they differ from vision statements, we then focus on corporate objectives, internal and external influences on them before looking at functional objectives. We wrap this up with a nice visual of how the mission flows down to the functional objectives. Difference between strategy and tactics is looked at.
The second powerpoint introduces learners to the value of a SWOT analysis. We start by looking at what a SWOT analysis is and the types of questions we need to ask ourselves to find out our SWOT. We then contextualise with a few activities and examples such as Mcdonald’s, Thornton’s and a brief sorting activity with Apples SWOT.
We then go on to look at a concise case study on BHP the large mining company, students can work in pairs or a group to assess the companies position using SWOT, the outcomes of this can be used to answer a 9 mark question based on the case study. This double lesson introduces learners to public expenditure by the government. We start by looking at the three different types of expenditure (current, capital and transfer payments) before a quick activity where students estimate how much of the pot is distributed in different areas. We then look at various graphs and charts such as spending over time, spending as % of GDP, changes in spending on different areas, future spending forecasts, all this should help to contextualise the topic, we also compare spending as % of GDP internationally. We then go onto look at reasons for changes in public expenditure as well as the impacts on aspects such as productivity, equality, taxation and crowding out. Some true or false questions to consolidate, video case studies for further contextualisation.
In the second lesson, there a diamond 9 group activity so students can justify where money should be spent, this creates a great opportunity to turn this into an election sort of activity as we then split the class into two different parties, each preparing a manifesto on how they will spend the budget.

This double (possibly triple) lesson develops students understanding of public sector finances with a focus on deficits and national debt. We start by looking at the difference between automatic stabilisers and discretionary fiscal policy with relevant examples and a consolidation task. We then go on to distinguish between deficits and national debt, with easy charts to deepen understanding of the UKs position over time. A calculation task to further consolidate understanding of how debt is calculated. This triple lesson brings together students’ understanding of macroeconomics from the whole course with a focus on fiscal, monetary and exchange rate policies, as well as supply side policies and direct controls. This double lesson introduces learners to the world of taxes. We start by discussing what a tax is, types of taxes in the UK and the categories of taxes such as progressive, proportional and regressive taxation. An engaging story video on progressive taxes to highlight what it is and an evaluation. We look at VAT with some charts and graphs to contextualise it before looking at current income tax rates. We discuss the economic effects of changes in direct and indrect tax rates on other variables with examples and thought provoking questions. This lesson builds on students understanding of the balance of payments from Theme 2, we now look at the financial and capital account as well as the current account. We start by recapping what the BoP is, some context given on surplus and deficits before we look at the causes and consequences of current account deficits. A group task for students to come up with policies to reduce a current account deficiit before we go through a range of strategies to address deficits in the BoP.
