Transforming biology teachers into classroom leaders using resources to develop excitement, continued engagement, critical thinking and challenging unconscious bias in science
This lesson is based on AQA A-level biology specification, looking at the topic of antibodies and monoclonal antibodies. In this lesson students will describe the structure of antibodies and how it relates to its highly specific function. Students will explain the process of monoclonal antibodies and its uses in medicine for diagnostic testing. Worksheets will also allows students to discuss the ethical concerns around the use of monoclonal antibodies. This lesson looks at various applications of monoclonal antibodies, specifically looking at pregnancy test and the ELISA test which will provide great foundation for the topic L7. HIV. Engagement is important, so the lesson begins with a fun starter game called hot seat, this game test students’ knowledge of keywords by applying their prior knowledge as well team building to derive to the correct answer.
This lesson includes the following:
Interactive and team building starter game
Worksheets for antibody diagram, ethics of monoclonal antibodies
Exam questions
Answers are included for worksheets and mark schemes
Estimated lesson time: 2 hours of A-level teaching
This is a fully resourced lesson plan that allows A level biology students to explore the humoral immune response. Students will be able to describe the different roles of B-lymphocytes to form antibodies and memory cells.
This lesson is packed with various activities:
Annotated diagram of clonal selection - Students will outline the steps involved in clonal selection of B cells
Card sort activity – Students in groups or independently can organise the image cards and descriptors to describe the process of humoral immunity
Annotated graph- To discuss the difference between primary and secondary immune response
Relevant past exam questions- Students will be able to apply their knowledge
This lesson would lead well in comparing the different specific immune response as well as sets the foundation for L5. Antibodies.
Answer sheet provided; good to project on the board when going through the sheet with your students.
Teaching time: This lesson can be delievered in 1 hour lesson
This lesson plan allows A level biology students to explore role vaccinations have on the immune system and the society at large. Students will be able to describe the different types of immunity, the role of vaccinations in society to produce herd immunity.
This lesson is packed with various activities:
Exam skills on data analysis of vaccination graphs, and comprehension style exam questions
Worksheets - for student led lessons on types of immunity & social impact of vaccinations on society
Relevant past exam questions- Students will be able to apply their knowledge
Answer sheet provided; good to project on the board when going through the sheet with your students
This fully-resourced lesson focuses on the events of cell meditated immunity which specifically initiates the specific immune response. The detailed PowerPoint has been designed to cover the 3.2.4 of the AQA A-level Biology specification which states that students should be able to describe role of T-lymphocytes in response to foreign antigens.
The lesson includes:
Millionaire Pound Drop game - students will recall previous topics with a low stakes starter game (instruction included)
Video and questions activity- to understand the concept of cell-meditated immunity
Group/ pair activity - students will use information from the video to create a detailed diagram of the entire process of cell-meditated immunity
Application questions- to challenge critical thinkers with real-life scenarios
This lesson is estimated to take about 1 hour of A-level teaching time to deliver

This lesson is fully resourced to help students understand the role of phagocytosis in a non-specific immune response. Students will be able to describe events of phagocytosis which will help them explain the importance of an antigen presenting cell for specific immunity (look for L3. T-lymphocyte and cell meditated immunity)
Students will start the lesson with an interactive and enjoyable starter game to help the teacher gauge students’ prior knowledge. This starter is intended to be a great starter at the beginning of a chapter/unit to further probe students’ foreknowledge.
This lesson includes:
Choice student led activity – Students can either annotate a labelled diagram of phagocytosis or create a comic strip to outline the events in phagocytosis
Past exam questions to assess students understanding
Estimated time: Should take 1 hour of teaching time for A-level students
