KS2 PSHE History focus -What does Fair trade mean to you? This lesson is suitable for upper KS2 This lesson is where pupils will: learn and understand the definition of Fair trade; Explain why Farmers rely on Fair trade for their produce; Discuss issues that are current in the news; discuss how EU sugar reform is endangering the livelihoods of small farmers and develop personal opinions and views. This is a discussion lesson that gives pupils opportunities in making suggestions on ways to improve the schools views and practices on Fair Trade. This lesson can be a stand alone lesson and is linked with the History lesson-Atlantic Trade Routes and 3 lessons of numeracy - Sailing & circumnavigating the high seas which can be purchased as a bundle. Two fun and interesting activities that are equally ideal lessons to be taught throughout the year or around Fair trade Fortnight, usually around 24th February - 8th March.

Pupils will be able to identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system within the body; and explain the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. Learning all about the circulatory system provides opportunities to learn and label the heart and the role of each part of the heart; the function of blood vessels and the role of the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in the body. Invitations for a qualified first aider to visit would allow pupils to learn about CPR, the recovery position and general first aid. This lesson is for designed for upper KS2 Giving pupils a chance to understand how food freezes to preserve it from decay. Also understand why certain food products can be cooked from frozen and others have to defrost. With opportunities to Investigate and taste test which foods taste better fresh or frozen? As the lesson is a practical session the practical preparation would need to be taught first, and the results gathered the following day, as freezing the food products the day before, ahead of cooking and tasting the frozen foods as well as the same freshly prepared food on that day. The attached numeracy lesson is linked as it reinforces why it is important to follow recipe instructions and methods before cooking, as well as measuring out ingredients correctly. A fun and stimulating lesson.

This lesson has been written for upper KS 2. The crux of the lesson is to find out as a class how water and nutrients are transported in the body to where they are needed. Also to gain an understanding of how blood has a function on the body and the role within the body; as well as understanding what the body’s circulatory system is responsible for and how it transports materials throughout the entire body. Discussions can also be generated on possible illnesses that are caused if the body doesn’t function adequately. Opportunities to invite st. Johns ambulance to offer talks to pupils can be arranged. (see website in web site links) Other First aid lesson plans can be found on this site. This lesson offers a good understanding on why water is vital to us humans, and how nutrients are transported around the body from the water we drink. Look out for the advanced water transportation lesson in the coming week. This lesson has been written for upper KS2 Food distribution is a current issue as is food production; this lesson is about both these issues. Children will consider both and investigate what foods are grown, produced and distributed in the UK; the impact farmers are facing with costs and profits when supplying their produce to supermarkets. Children will have opportunities in mapping food production and distribution in the Great Britain and around the world, and write a report on why there is so much food waste from vegetables grown and consider why supermarkets don’t take vegetables and fruit because they don’t math the criteria in size and shape. This lesson is suitable for upper kS2 Giving opportunities to research the principles of what a balanced diet is. Understand the reasons why we should eat a balanced diet, by explaining what a balanced diet consists off. By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to give an explanation of a well balanced and healthy diet through the ‘eat well’ plate; successfully categorise the different types of food that make up our diet. Explain what the proportions are; and how we should eat them, recall the differences of good and bad fats and identify processed sugars and natural sugars in food sources. With a focus on teaching Healthy food and exercise involves a balanced diet and keeping fit. Refer the teaching notes and websites. Independent/groups activities include placing foods correctly on the eatwell plate using the word vocabulary document. (Use hoops for the different food groups) Independently design a day’s menu that has the entire food groups in.

This science lesson is for upper KS2 and grades 5-8 Pupils will learn and successfully describe the process of the digestive system, identifying and naming the parts of the digestive system through interactive games and using an outline of the body draw and annotate what they know happens to food when they’ve eaten it. From shared learning and class activities of the lesson pupils should be able to label and identify parts of the digestive system correctly. Also thinking about the questions asked in the power point and how to answer key questions using the stem sentence approach; A summary of children’s learning is to write a clear explanation of the function of each part of the digestive system and how the digestive system works. This lesson is for upper KS2 Where pupils will learn all about making comparisons and connections between early civilizations and today. By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to compare and contrast how early civilizations have developed socially and culturally over time. This lesson allows pupils to explore Stone Age man through watching a number of video clips of how hunter gatherers lived in Neolithic times and how farming developed through the ages looking into the similarities and differences of Neolithic man to modern day man. This lesson will give opportunities to many questions being asked from the pupils to find answers to, and thinking about the era they would prefer to live in.

Asking the question ‘What is obesity?’ With further investigations and watching clips on fat and how it affects the body; what diseases and health implications are there on the human body when consuming too much bad fat. As well as Identifying how the Quakers helped the American slaves to their freedom? This lesson is designed for upper KS2. Giving pupils a chance to learn about which foods can be frozen; also to understand the importance of blanching vegetables before being frozen. This practical lesson involves recording and making systematic observations on the state of frozen foods that are defrosting. Having a selection of raw prepared fruit and vegetables with high water content, pupils will have a tasting session and answer questions if all fruit and vegetables can be frozen; which foods can be blanched. This science lesson would have to be taught in the morning as observations will need to be made throughout the day. Pupils will write their conclusions and evaluations on which foods and be frozen.

This lesson is designed for upper KS2 Giving pupils a chance to understand why it is important to store food correctly. This is an investigative lesson where pupils have to demonstrate how to store foods correctly and examine the differences between use by and best before dates. There are interactive activities that are directly linked on how to store foods, which foods are best to store in plastic containers, as well as sharing thoughts about hygiene in the kitchen. By the end of the lesson pupils will have a good understanding and will produce a class wall of knowledge using post-it notes, discussing any misconceptions and sharing new facts the children have learnt from this lesson. The photos can be used to place correctly on the fridge shelf or food cupboard. (more foods will be added to the zipped file)
