I am an experienced teacher and currently Head of English and Media in a large secondary school. I am also an examiner for EDUQAS English Language GCSE. I have a range of resources available on TES. Some of my resources are quite old, from when I first started out, and I am currently working in my spare time to update my resources. There are a range of resources from displays, schemes of work, revision booklets, mock exam papers and lessons available.

Merchant of Venice homework task menu

To tackle the lack of enthusiasm about homework in my school I created a Nando's menu of homework tasks. This one targets key stage 4 and above and assists teaching of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. There are 25 homeworks already planned, differentiated by 'spice'. Since using these menus, where the students pick for themselves, the amount and quality of homework has improved

Eduqas/WJEC Poetry Anthology link grid.

(1)
A very useful visual revision aide for students completing the Eduqas/WJEC English GCSE. A thematic grid to outline which poems have the most links, and are therefore more likely to come up on the GCSE paper. Colour coded by theme, easily outlined and a great starting point for revision.

GCSE WJEC/Eduqas English Literature. Poetry- The Soldier- Rupert Brooke Analysis lesson

(2)
A complete lesson with all resources, learning objectives, success criteria and poem breakdown. This lesson starts with a do now activity where students explore the stereotypical image of a soldier, mind mapping ideas around an image. The PowerPoint then talks through key notes for the context, content, structure, form, language, imagery and tone of the poem. The poem has a step by step analysis, including key questions, so students can expand understanding and knowledge whilst having discussion opportunities to expand deeper meaning. This can be used as a complete lesson, but it can equally be used as a revision aide for students either in or outside of the classroom. All Eduqas questions are thematic, so the next step would be to pose the question ‘How is War presented in The Soldier’. Teachers are able to edit or add to this lesson to aide understanding - this lesson was created for lower ability sets.

A complete mock paper for the Eduqas English Language Component 2- non fiction 19th and 21st century. A powerpoint and mock paper for the English Language GCSE. Powerpoint goes through each reading question in detail, helping students understand the question and what is expected of them. The powerpoint does not cover the transactional writing, however two transactional writing questions are included in the mock paper. A good way of instilling confidence in students before the exam.

An interesting and moving P4C lesson on secrets and trust, using an emotional article showing lots of notes other students have written about things they wish their teacher knew. A really engaging and informative lesson helping students consider philosophical issues whilst encouraging positive relationships with teachers and peers.

Blackout analysis - Hope is the thing with feathers Emily Dickinson

(1)
A creative, engaging and interesting lesson looking at an Emily Dickenson poem and analyzing language. Students are given a range of tasks to help 'zoom in' on word choice and meaning. Students are asked to create a 'blackout' picture, keeping only the five most important words to them. Used with a top set year 7 class, but easily adapted for key stage 4.

Eduqas component 2 19th and 21st century non fiction texts mock paper

I have created a 'mock' component 2 paper using a 19th century advert for Cadbury's cocoa and a recent 21st century article commenting on Nesquik's advertising of it's chocolate milk. I have made this exam practice paper to help students get used to the style of exam, but used an easier text than usual to boost confidence. This is set out in the exact way Eduqas (formerly WJEC) has laid out it's specimen papers and is an incredibly useful tool when teaching students the correct way to answer each question. I have used these in conjunction with my Blood Brothers scheme of work, working with year 9 students in preparation for their GCSE course.
