This lesson involves a paired reading and summarising task, before analysing wartime propaganda images regarding some of the aspects of DORA. While the content is appropriate for experiences of soldiers from across Britain, some activities are tailored towards the Scottish examination system. As I operate a mixed class, there are activities designed for both National 4 and National 5 included within the lesson. This lesson examines four key battles of WWI involving Scottish soldiers. Two have a specific Scottish focus - Loos and Arras. Each battle is examined in terms of the purpose of the battle, the casualty statistics of the battle, the main weapons used in the battle and their impact, and the main tactics used in the battle and their impact. There are accompanying images of the battle/those involved, as well as of the memorials that now stand at these sites. National 4 students are to then use their notes to write a newspaper article, while National 5 students will attempt a To What Extent 9 mark exam question.

While the content is appropriate for experiences of soldiers from across Britain, some activities are tailored towards the Scottish examination system. Students learn about the tactics and training methods Scottish (and British) troops experienced during WWI. Students study a set of tactics and consider their strengths and weaknesses. Following this there are practice exam source questions with basic marking criteria included so students can peer mark if desired.

Students will complete a carousel task on the different technologies used and developed in WWI. Students will then complete practice source questions, a storyboard activity and finally a timed exam question for those attempting National 5.

While the content is appropriate for experiences of soldiers from across Britain, some activities are tailored towards the Scottish examination system. As I operate a mixed class, there are activities designed for both National 4 and National 5 included within the lesson. This is the second lesson in a unit sequence on Scotland and the Great War. The lesson begins with a starter task on conditions in the trenches using an image to get students thinking about these conditions. Students are then introduced to features of the trench system and trench warfare, before studying four aspects of trench conditions. Students will take notes from information and videos in the PowerPoint. Students will then undertake practice exam source questions including a Describe and a Compare question. Students who finish early have the option to write a letter about the conditions from the perspective of a soldier in the trenches.

As I operate a mixed class, there are activities designed for both National 4 and National 5 included within the lesson. The lesson begins with background information regarding the need for recruitment, and then requires students to take notes on some of the reasons men from Scotland were encouraged to enlist. Following this, National 5 students will complete practice source questions to prepare them for their examinations. Source response structures/marking criteria are included in the PowerPoint to allow for peer marking and detailed explanation of how to gain higher marks. National 4 students will also complete source questions, however these questions can instead be used to gather a portfolio of evidence for their unit assessments, or to help prepare them to take on National 5 in the future. Other tasks include a Pals Battalion comprehension task with questions, and a 'create your own' recruitment advertisement activity for those in National 4 or National 5 students who finish early. While there may appear to be only one activity, they will be revealed through the course of the PowerPoint due to animations and so on!
