They will also have the opportunity to learn about a well known "Idiom". Students will write sentences using some of the vocabulary words and will create a new novel title and cover. A fun and creative way for your students to summarize what they have read and learned in the novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. The Breadwinner, a children's novel by Deborah Ellis is about an 11-year-old girl named Parvana. She is forced by circumstances to be the breadwinner for her family in a war-torn Taliban-era in Afghanistan. While reading the novel, have a class discussion on how girls and women are treated differently than boys and men. Then have the students complete the comic strip assignment sheet, that will show that girls and women should be given the same freedom as boys and men. After completing the novel, have your students complete the poster assignment. A poster rubric is included. As an extension, have the students present the poster to their classmates. A great assessment tool for Novel Study and Media Literacy as well! The Book report can be used as a quick assessment. My Sentence Making Journey is a great way to get younger students started in making/writing complete sentences. The booklet has the "Alphabet" as its primary theme. The completed sentences have at least one word of the highlighted alphabet from the page. Included for the younger or struggling student, are sentence strips. These strips could be photocopied, each word could be cut out and the students could arrange to make a complete sentence. The students can then paste the completed sentence on the sheet. A picture of the sentence can then be drawn and colored by the students.
