Learning with Literature: Ten Little Fish Music and/or Poetry Composition Lesson

I love bringing Children’s Literature into the music classroom, especially when it can help kids get creative! This lesson uses the book “Ten Little Fish” by Audrey Wood to teach kids about writing lyrics and singing a simple Do Re Mi melody. This is the extended version of a lesson introduced in Pitch Hill! In this lesson students will learn a song based on the words of “Ten Little Fish,” study how these words were composed, and then compose their own song based on the formula they uncovered! In addition, an extension activity is provided for those who have technology available. Students will use the app, Story Kit, to bring their compositions to life! Not a music teacher? Don’t worry! This lesson lends itself wonderfully as a poetry composition lesson! … In this resource you will receive: Detailed lesson plans for composing a song based on “Ten Little Fish.” Engaging PowerPoint to lead your students through uncovering the formula for composing the lyrics. Composition papers to guide your students writing lyrics. Differentiated versions are available. (Note: Both the Composition Papers and PowerPoint come in a “Compose a Song” and “Compose a Poem” version). Editable rubric for the Story Kit creations your students produce. … Like this product? Learning with Literature: Manana Iguana - Lesson plan - Solfege practice!

I love bringing Children’s Literature into the music classroom, especially when it can help kids get creative! This lesson uses the book “Manana Iguana” by Ann Whitford Paul to teach kids about solfege notes (do, re, mi, sol, and la) and experience syncopation (though we don’t discuss it as part of the lesson). This is the extended version of a lesson introduced in Pitch Hill! In this lesson, students learn a song to accompany the book using the pitches do, re, mi, fa, and sol. Students then learn a couple of fun instrument patterns and put the song with the book. The lesson is written for 2nd grade but can be easily modified for other grade levels. This is also a wonderful way to connect with your Spanish speakers in your room! … In this resource you will receive: Detailed lesson plans for the lesson based on “Manana Iguana” Engaging PowerPoint to lead your students through practicing the melody and identify solfege in the song. Differentiated worksheets to work on identifying the solfege pitches in the song, “Manana Iguana.” Rubric for Manana Iguana performance. … Note: A special thank you to Ann Whitford Paul for permission to use their character, “Iguana.” If you purchase this, make sure you grab their book! … Note: The page count does not include the 20 pages of Spanish word practice in the presentation (they are a repetitive template). … Like this product? Kindergarten/1st Grade Music Lesson - Pitch/Melody Composition - Pumpkin Stew

(0)
This is a great lesson plan for melodic composition for kindergarten or first grade. Students will learn a simple melody using three pitches in a minor key. Then students will be guided through comparing the three pitches and then create their own melody using three pitches. Note: You may have heard a different version of this song, and I want to be sure this resource meets your needs. Song lyrics by Sue Snyder. Used with permission. In this resource, pitches are notated as high, medium, and low (no absolute pitch names or solfege names are intended to be taught). In addition, this lesson makes a great review of quarter note, eighth notes, and quarter rest (ta, ti-ti, rest or ta, ta-di, rest). Versions with traditional and stick notation are included, though the lesson can be taught using only iconic notation. Assessments include stick notation, traditional notation, and iconic notation versions for differentiation. Though this composition lesson plan was written to match the pacing for kindergarten in my district, it would be appropriate for 1st grade in many districts as well. … Included in this File Detailed (yet editable) lesson plans for kindergarten. State (GA) GPS Standards, National Music Standards, and National Core Arts Standards are marked. Feel free to edit for other grade levels (this lesson would work well for first grade in many situations). PowerPoint to guide the lesson - available in stick and traditional notation. PDF version of the PowerPoint for you to import into your desired IWB (Absolutely NOT required to complete this lesson!). Images for PERSONAL use to create your own variations with provided templates. Assessment papers for students to create their own three-pitched melody. Versions with stick, standard, and iconic notation are included. Coloring pages to print on the back of assessments for your early finishers. . Please take a look at the preview and feel free to ask questions before purchasing. The lesson plans are completely editable so you may adjust them for your individual situation. Additional items you need to teach the lesson directly as written that are NOT included.* Pencils, Projector, non-pitched instruments (optional).
