The last lesson in our English Civil War Unit of Work. The lesson looks at different interpretations of King Charles II which students weigh up against a Horrible Histories sketch. Students identify some of the reasons why William built castles. They label a motte and bailey castle and analyse how castles changed during medieval times. Some students will identify and explain the impact that castles had on the Saxons.

The first 6 lessons for the unit USA 1919-1945. Lesson one is an introduction to the course where students are introduced to the main themes/ characters that they will study in the course. Lesson 2 requires the students to imagine what USA was like in 1920 before annotating/ analysing sources from the period and then revisiting their initial view and then explaining how their view has changed. Lesson 3 looks at the reasons for the economic boom. Lesson 4 explores the groups of people who either benefited/ did not benefit from the boom. Lesson 5 looks at the Jazz movement. All lessons contain detailed resources, literacy support, differentiated materials and key word/ literacy materials.

This lesson works well when studying the Holocaust or Nazi Germany. Students watch a clip from the film Europa Europa (in German). They are required to guess the nature of the sketch before re-watching in English. Following this they are shown a school timetable (showing subjects studied etc). Easy to follow lesson on why people went on a crusade. This is an active learning lesson where students collect data from other students, extra information from sources and make decisions re the reasons why people went on a crusade. The main activity is creating a teaching poster (example and success criteria included). The Students need to structure PEE paragraphs in their poster which will help explain their poster ideas. Clear instructions included.

Source analysis activity where by students analyse each source in order to gain insight into how car production fueled the economic boom. The students record their findings in a table (source description and an explanation as to how each source suggests that the car industry influenced the boom). Following this they have to produce a diagram to help explain the importance of the car industry. An exam style question concludes the lesson.

Students have been asked for their advice on a documentary about why Hitler lost WW2. They are introduce to some key factors which they rank by using a radar graph. They then have to decide how much time should be allocated to each factor in the documentary based on their findings. Card sort and decision making activity. Main task involves students making a poster/ map to help explain why there was an economic boom in the 1920s. The students need to decide what they believe were the most important factors.

Students work through a card sort and a diamond 9 activity to determine the key factors in the German invasion of France. They write up their findings in a report template which develops their literacy skills by asking them to select the best evidence to support their findings. Challenge for the more able who create their own categories and suggest how France could avoid future invasions. As always there are clear instructions and high-quality differentiated resources.

This lesson aims to develop GCSE skills. Students are introduced to a 'how far do you agree' style question. They work their way through a categorising and a prioritising card sort with follow-up questions which can be used to check understanding and develop their comprehension of the content. Thy then use the categories as their key factors in responding to the question. Literacy support is included as well as a writing frame for the lower ability students. Students learn about why so many men died during the Battle of the Somme. Activities include, creating a fact file, a card sort with categorizing and prioritizing tasks and a report writing exercise. A lesson on the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Students rearrange cards to correctly sequence events leading to war which they use to create a narrative account story board. A lesson on the Magna Carta. Students analyse King John’s story to investigate the reasons why the barons were unhappy. They score the different factors and insert evidence to support their scores. After group discussions the students create their own Magna Carta choosing/ creating 5 rules that they think should be included. They use evidence of John’s actions to support the inclusion of the rules.

An investigation lessons. Students study a range of clues which help to explain the death of Thomas Becket. Having worked their way through the evidence they must decide who was a fault for the death.
