03.2 Analyse the data shown in figure 5. (6)
03.3 Using Figure 6a, Figure 6b and your own knowledge, assess the potential impact of these changes on coastal landform development in this area. (6)
03.4 Assess the relative importance of weathering and erosion in the development of coastal landscapes. (20)
A level Geography carbon and water cycle resource.
Included:
Model answer to this question:
With reference to a river catchment that you have studied, assess the potential impact of human activity upon the drainage basin. (20 marks)
Support tasks to help students to prepare for this question.
Globalisation teaching activity and model answer for helping to teach global connections as well as production, distribution and consumption, which is a part of Social Studies national curriculum for grade 11 & 12 in the U.S.A.
To what extent do the advantages of globalisation outweigh the disadvantages? 20 marks
The resources I have created consist of:
A sorting activity which encourages students to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation for TNC’s, newly emerging economies/low income countries and high income countries
A model answer for students to examine. This model answer helps to show students how to apply knowledge and create an introductory paragraph as well as an evaluative conclusion.
This teaching resource helps students to consider the role of human and natural causes in the formation of sand dunes at Camber Sands. This resource helps students to assess and evaluate in order to prepare for typical nine and twenty mark questions that are set by AQA.
Model answer for the following AQA 20 mark A level question.
‘In a globalising world the use of the global common of Antarctica can never be sustainable.’ How far do you agree with this view?
Tasks have been created to go with the model answer.
Assess the role of transport pathways in the development of coastal landforms. (9)
Model answer to the question above and tasks to support students in helping to assess the processes in landform development.
To what extent does an understanding of feedback systems in the carbon cycle help with attempts to mitigate the impacts of climate change? 20 marks.
Assess the potential impact of changing vegetation cover upon the runoff in this area. 6 marks.
Outline flows within the water cycle operating on a hill slope. 4 marks.
This resource includes model answers for each of these questions. I have also included a sorting activity as well as additional tasks and a wider reading list. Completion of these activities will help students to access the higher grades.
Model answer for the following exam question:
To what extent are the concepts of resilience, mitigation and adaptation exemplified by activities in and around Antarctica?
Three resources in one document that will need two one hour lessons to complete or one lesson followed by homework. This has been written for the teaching the new AQA A level Geography however this unit is also found within the other A level Geography specifications.
Resource 1 - Sorting activity related to the carbon and water cycle. This helps with synoptic links and includes a section that links the water cycle to carbon fluxes by volcanoes.
Resource 2 - Model answer for the following question - Assess the extent to which there are interrelationships between processes in water cycle and factors driving change in the carbon cycle. (20 marks)
Resource 3 - An alternative question with a plan to help students to apply knowledge from one essay question to another. This helps them to develop their skills in applying their knowledge to different questions.
‘The Disaster Response Curve (The Park Model) has contributed to improved understanding and therefore management of the impact of tectonic hazards.’
To what extent do you agree with this view? [20 marks]
Students I teach find it difficult to evaluate the Park model and as AQA released an example of this in relation to tropical storms, I have decided to create a tectonic version instead.
The first version of the essay contains too much content and I use this to get students to discuss the validity of the arguments in each paragraph. Students then decide on which paragraphs should be omitted. The second page of the source contains the edited version with an outline of table that students can use to summaries the advantages and disadvantages of the model.
Model answers included for the following questions:
Assess the role of sub-aerial processes in the development of coastal landforms. (9)
Assess the role of erosional processes in the development of coastal landforms. (9)
Assess the role of transport pathways in the development of coastal landforms. (9)
Under the previous A level Geography specification exam questions often focused on describing landforms and explaining the formational processes. However, the new specification expects students to be able to assess the role of different processes in the creation of coastal landscapes. This work sheet helps students to achieve this.
The resources includes:
An outline of how wave cut platforms form.
A systems analysis activity on wave cut platforms.
Exam questions and models answers to support students in assessing the role of different processes in the creation of coastal landscapes.
A glossary of key terms, theory and examples to support the teaching of global systems and global governance. This detailed resource contains over twelve pages of information that is structured in the order that this unit is taught,
I have designed this to support the AQA specification however, this will overlap with the other A level Geography specifications.
Exemplar response and resource to support this topic.
Question:
How does differential access to markets impact upon economic and societal wellbeing? (9 marks)
This resource also includes links to supportive web sites. I have also included follow up activities that will turn this resource into a one hour lesson activity.
Evaluate the view that mitigation strategies are more important than adaptation strategies in addressing the risks posed by the degradation of the carbon cycle. (20) Edexcel 2018 (PHYSICAL SYSTEMS AND SUSTAINABILITY)
This resource includes an exemplar essay that has been written with guidance from the mark scheme.
This resource also includes links to wider reading material and supportive tasks that will help students to examine the key elements of the essay.
This question originates from Edexcel however, the content overlaps with the AQA specification.
Globalisation teaching activity and model answer for the new A level Geography curriculum.
To what extent do the advantages of globalisation outweigh the disadvantages? [20] (or 25 marks under WJEC)
AQA are yet to release a direct globalisation essay question so I have taken this question from an exam paper released by WJEC. This is still from the new A level.
The resources I have created consist of:
A sorting activity which encourages students to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation for TNC’s, NEE/LIC’s and HIC’s.
A model answer for students to examine. This model answer helps to show students how to apply knowledge and create an introductory paragraph as well as an evaluative conclusion.
This resource pack includes revision material to help prepare students for the water & carbon unit of the AQA Geography course. However, these materials would also be useful for AS & A level courses from other exam boards.
A case study of a river catchment(s) at a local scale appeared in AQA Geography AS exam during 2017 however, it is yet to appear in the AQA exam for A2, so I have decided to focus in greater depth on this section for 2021. The specification lists this case study at the end of the unit & asks students to “examine the themes above” (i.e. carbon cycle as well as the water cycle) therefore to develop lateral thinking skills I have focused on helping students to consider how the changes in the carbon cycle can impacts upon the drainage basin system.
Resources included:
Three & half pages of key terms with definitions.
2a) Model answer for the following question:
Assess the extent to which there are inter-relationships between processes in the carbon cycle and factors driving change in the flows and stores of water within river catchment(s) at a local scale. (20 marks)
2b) Previous model answer adapted into a model answer for the following question: (Please note this not a completely different model answer)
Assess the potential impacts of human interference in the carbon cycle upon run-off variations for a river catchment(s) at a local scale. (20 marks)
This essay is VERY similar to the previous example; however, it can be used to show how prior knowledge can be adapted to different questions.
List of sources that have been used within the previous model answer. The link to the National River Flow Archive it of much use. These model answers could easily be adapted to a local river elsewhere in the country, perhaps one that is local to the students that you teach.
Additional question and plan that students can use to further develop their exam technique.
Model answer to go with the following AQA 20 mark Geography essay question.
With reference to a multi-hazardous environment that you have studied, assess the view that the underlying cause(s) leading to the hazards is human activity rather than physical factors.
‘Human activity always has a negative impact on the development of landforms of coastal deposition.’
To what extent do you agree with this view? (20 marks)
Assess the view that tides are the most important factor in the development of mudflats in estuarine environments. (9 marks)
Exemplar answers to these AQA 2019 AS questions.
