This resource comprises 10 worksheets designed to secure, revise, and test knowledge of Scales and Modes. Principally aimed at Year 10 and 11 GCSE students, each worksheet should take around 25 minutes to complete, and a full set of detailed, annotated answers are provided, making them perfect for a variety of uses – particularly distance learning and cover lessons led by teachers with limited specialist subject knowledge. They can also be used as tests in class, for homework tasks, or just general revision/ practice for working with unfamiliar short extracts of written music – and with 10 x 25-minute worksheets to tackle, there will be plenty for your students to do! This resource is also appropriate for bridging at A Level or as further practice for Grade 4-5 ABRSM Theory students in respect of the general exercises. Specifically, each worksheet in this pack incorporates a short 8 to 16 bar piano composition, which is an original piece composed by myself – so there is a guarantee that your students will have never seen this music before! There are 20 questions on each piece, covering a wide variety of topics appropriate to the music. Topics include, but are not limited to: rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic devices; metre and tempo; cadence, chord, and interval recognition; foreign terms (up to approximately Grade 5 ABRSM Theory Level); structural features such as repeats and time bars… and there is so much more, too! In total, there are 200 questions – all with comprehensive answers – and each worksheet gets progressively more challenging. Furthermore, since I have deliberately crafted each piece around a programmatic title, teachers can easily set a ‘master/ extension’ question for each piece (marking it at their own discretion), “How does the music relate to the title”? There will always be plenty for students to say, and it will allow those who are able to, to produce higher-level commentaries after answering the set questions. It’s a hidden gem within the resource, and it could add a further 15 – 20 minutes of mileage to every single worksheet. There are up to 3 hours of content in this pack, which covers each of the 6 musical eras of the Western Classical Tradition, a 900-year musical journey! It’s a great introduction to the musical eras and because of the way it is designed and structured, it is also an excellent choice for cover work. Each of the six musical eras from the Medieval to the 20th-Century has its own reading, writing, and listening activity, with a further True or False activity for Medieval and Renaissance, Baroque and Classical, and Romantic and 20th Century, to deepen understanding. While students complete the reading and comprehension activities for each era, there are YouTube links provided to suitable and interesting pieces of music to play in the background, giving students a ‘flavour’ of the era that they are reading about and answering questions about, and a listening sheet to record their observations and opinions for a class discussion at the end of the activity. The links are all checked and are valid as of 28th October 2020. There is also a teacher handout with full instructions as to how to run the lessons, including questions to ask the students, and prompts to remind them of certain things. The great thing about this resource is it is also absolutely perfect for a supply or substitute teacher who has no specialist musical knowledge at all. The teacher handout even has a box at the bottom to give you feedback or concerns from the lesson(s), so you can follow up, just in case you have set it as cover. This topic focuses on Articulation, which includes volume dynamics. This movement is ideal for study as part of the Stage 6 Music 2 HSC Program. As a full first movement from a Romantic Concerto, it fits into the mandatory area of study Western Music 1600-1900. A Sibelius score is an exceptionally powerful tool to have for analysing chords, themes, motives, and much more, at the click of a button. There are clear advantages of having a Sibelius score as a study aid. With the later versions of these scores, you can isolate individual parts to show melodic lines and harmonies more clearly, you can use the chord analysis and ‘find motive’ functions making analysis quicker and easier – and there are several other analysis plug-ins that Sibelius offer, making your life much easier. Another clear advantage of having a Sibelius Score in addition to a paper one is that it is an invaluable aid to improve score-reading: the playback line runs along with the music and students can better see what is happening. Certainly, my students all benefited from Sibelius scores for their set works – this particular Sibelius score (all 11 minutes of it) is the longest one I have ever input into the software! This lesson focuses on Chords and Cadences. Specific content is as follows: Major/ Minor/ Diminished/ Augmented chords and how they fit into major and minor keys; Root Position/ First Inversion/ Second Inversion chords; Perfect/ Imperfect/ Plagal/ Interrupted/ Tierce de Picardie Cadences. A LEVEL MUSIC COMPOSITION Harmonising a Melody AQA Edexcel OCR Eduqas

This is an Introduction to 4-part harmony. It is a full and comprehensive topic that would fit nicely into 3 x 1-hour lessons, but could be squeezed into 2 x 1-hour lessons with a gifted A-Level Music class if the final task was also set as homework. The content is based around an introduction to Bach Chorales. There are 4 tasks in total. Task 1 is: choosing chords to harmonise a melody. This is based on identifying the key , drawing out triads, and matching given melody notes with the triads/ chords, leading to a 4-part arrangement of the chord progression they have chosen, applying the techniques that are introduced throughout. Task 2 is: Arranging for 4 parts. Students are given a fixed chord progression with which to harmonise the melody from task 1. Meanwhile the PowerPoint will take them through the following: Note Doubling; Consecutive 5ths ; Consecutive 8ves ; Consecutive Unisons ; Chord Spacing ; Six-Way check (SA; ST; SB; AT; AB; TB) to prevent banned consecutives. Task 3 is: Using passing notes to create momentum. Students will be shown a model answer on the PowerPoint to Task 2, which then becomes the starting point for Task 3. The PowerPoint takes students through passing notes (what they are, what they do, and pitfalls of using too many at once) and then students are to add passing notes to the given arrangement. Task 4 is: Working in a minor key. Students use the tonic minor to largely transfer their arrangement from the major, but new concepts are introduced for them to think about: melodic augmented 2nds (and using the melodic minor scale to avoid them); Tierce de Picardie cadence (where, how, and why it’s used); the tricky Mediant in minor keys. From a teaching perspective, you have a full 20-slide Powerpoint making delivery of content easy, MP3 audios of the model answers so students can hear how nice good 4-part writing really sounds, Sibelius 5, 6, 7, and 7.5 templates if you want to use Music ICT to complete the tasks, 4 x PDF worksheets (that you’ll want to hand out one at a time because model answers become the next worksheet!) in case you don’t have/ don’t wish to use Music ICT. This lesson is intended as a first step towards creating proper modulations using pivot chords as part of a Cycle of Fifths progression. The topic builds upon prior knowledge of the Circle of Fifths, Major and Minor Scales, and creating triads. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint that really goes the extra mile. 24 x written/ notation tasks guide students through the following concepts: deriving a House of Keys (for Modulation options) from the Circle of Fifths; how to organise diatonic chords into a Cycle of Fifths progression; how to find common chords between ‘House of Key’ keys; how to use a common chord as a Pivot chord within a Cycle of Fifths progression in the target key. This topic builds upon prior knowledge of modulation to related keys via a pivot chord within Cycle of 5ths Progressions. The specific focus of this topic is the Dominant 7th Chord, and it comprises a full study on how a V7 chord may be applied in a variety of situations. Students are first shown how to create a 7th chord on any degree of a major or minor scale, and the dominant 7th chord is highlighted as important. The first activity requires students to apply the V7 chord to create Perfect Cadences in a variety of keys up to 4 sharps and flats, which also serves as excellent revision of key signatures and scales. The second activity examines the V7 chord as a substitute for the Leading chord in a cycle of 5ths progression, requiring students to follow a Roman Numerals chord progression to craft modulations between adjacent minor keys on the Circle of Fifths – providing excellent revision of chord positions and triad creation. The third activity examines how a pivot chord need not be identical, but instead a ‘strong best fit’, requiring students to craft more complex modulations. The final activity is a listening one in which students’ ability to distinguish between modulations to the dominant and subdominant in both major and minor keys is tested. By the end of the topic your students will have arrived at the border of Advanced Level study in Harmony and Tonality, and it will have stretched your most able students to achieve the very highest grades in composition through outstanding modulations. Each Bingo Game has 15 different items – 270 musical items in total appear in this pack, spanning the 6 themes outlined above. Each theme has 3 tiered games, and each game has 12 unique playing cards, which can very realistically be doubled up for a class of 24 students. Each of the 18 games has a master calling card containing either 2 or 3 tiered clues, allowing you to customise the level of challenge for your classes. You can also follow one of the pre-set calling patterns on the calling card to enable you to know which of the 12 cards should win, and when it should win – this also helps you to monitor how well students know the content, but in a fun, informal way. Each unique playing card has a total of 9 of the 15 items from the calling card on it in a 3 x 3 grid, and the tiered clue system allows for flexibility in terms of the level of challenge that you pose to your students for each game. Nonetheless, Level 1 games are generally suitable for beginners in written music, Level 2 games for slightly more experienced musicians, and Level 3 games for more confident musicians. In terms of specific age groups, you will find that you can use most of the 18 games for Key Stage 3, with only a few games more naturally appropriate to lower Key Stage 4 (Intervals). That being said, you will also find that you can use the tiered clue system to adapt most of the 18 games for Key Stage 4, too – so there is a lot of inherent flexibility! This resource pack comprises 10 Code Breaker Puzzles based on general musical knowledge of 10 different areas, and are designed for Key Stage 3 music students. With each puzzle expected to take students between 15 and 30 minutes to complete, they are ideal for individual homework tasks, or can be used in combination to fill at least 2 complete cover lessons. Specifically, the puzzles are based on the following 10 themes: famous composers; instruments; popular musicals; music styles and genres; basic foreign terms (tempos, dynamics, performance directions, etc); notation (signs, symbols, elements, etc); famous classical pieces of music; famous rock and pop bands (mostly from the past); describing music (terms relating to descriptions of melody, tonality, structure, etc); Christmas Songs and Carols (for a handy, fun, and seasonal puzzle). Students use logic and problem-solving skills to complete a code-breaker grid in which each letter has been replaced by a number. Each puzzle has a different theme and contains between 20 and 25 words, names, and/ or terms which must be found from one initial clue-word containing 4 different letters. Each time a new word is discovered, new letters are revealed, and to solve the entire puzzle students must replace every number in the grid with its corresponding letter, correctly spelling out all of the names or terms. Each of the 10 puzzles also contain a variety of shaded yellow and blue boxes, which must be unscrambled after all letters have been discovered, to reveal two final names, words, or terms related to the topic. A full set of answers are provided so that students can self-mark and correct – especially important if you use the activities for cover as you will not want to return to a pile of marking! Additionally, a 2-page Teacher Guidance plan is included to fully explain how the code-breakers work, taking you through an example, and to provide suggestions for extension tasks and for offering extra help to students attempting to solve the puzzles. A Moment to Midnight is one of my original piano compositions, and it’s a great little piece to add to an A Level recital or University audition program. At just one and a half minutes long, it is perfect for topping up a student program to the required duration. Other than that, it’s not only an engaging piece with enough challenge to keep more advanced piano students interested and busy, it’s a lovely piece to perform at a school concert. So many piano teachers have often told me that they struggle to provide their more able students with modern sheet music in a style that is accessible to them, so I’m delighted to combine two of my passions with this new line of resources for piano teachers. I estimate the piece to be in line with Grade 8 ABRSM standard (some tricky left hand), but I recommend that you please watch the promotional video, which will enable you to decide whether the piece is the right level (and style) for your students. With regards to the style, it’s indebted to the music from the Final Fantasy game series – pieces like To Zanarkand by Nobuo Uematsu – a great inspiration to me as a composer.
