I am a NYS certified English teacher. I've taught every grade level from 6-12 in New York City and at a British International School in Dubai in the Middle East. I am currently working as a full-time high school English teacher and English Dept. Chair at a high-need public high school in the South Bronx. I have experience teaching middle school and high school English Language Arts, writing, literature, English Regents and journalism classes. I am also an adjunct professor at CUNY.

If you're that meticulous and over-zealous English teacher who wants to get to know his or her students' interests and abilities from Day 1, this fun and extensive student survey is a must for you! It will inspire your students to think creatively as well as lead them to self-reflect about their own academic strengths and weaknesses in an English classroom setting. There are 21 questions in total, though some questions contain multiple parts, require the circling of several items or ask students to rate themselves in various areas. I give out this 1-page (front to back) survey to my students on the first day as an extended Do Now every year and save the completed surveys in a central binder. The information you collect from these surveys is very helpful in creating engaging lessons and addressing the many diverse needs of a large population of students. You will also collect information that can assist you with making seating assignments, planning partner and group work and addressing behavioral problems.

All the work is done for you! If you are a New York City high school teacher who is looking for an efficient and clear way to track participation, preparedness and behavior, these fully editable monthly tracking charts for the 2015-2016 school year are for you! I've already compiled all the dates, including Regents days, holidays and parent conferences. These charts could be easily adjusted to fit the NYC elementary or middle school calendar as well as the school calendar for another school district anywhere else in the world. I use the following tracking system for "Accountable Talk/Participation": POINTS: Each student starts the day with 20 points (100 points per week – 100%.) POINTS DROP AS FOLLOWS: Unexcused Absence = -10 per day; Unpreparedness (missing books or supplies) = -5; Disruptive Behavior (not following classroom expectations/rules) = -5 to -20; Lack of Accountable Talk/Participation in the lesson: -5 to -10. Please preview the September Chart for clarification. To make the system easy to use while teaching a lesson, I only record negative points on the chart. A blank box would indicate the student earned/did not lose any of his or her 20 points for the day. If at the end of a 5-day school week the student has 3 blank boxes, 1 box with -15 and 1 box with -10, I would record a grade of 75% in the week total box. I input a Participation Grade for students in my Grade Book online once a week. A student who cuts class for the week would only earn a weekly grade of 50/100, a failing grade. Likewise, a student who attends class every day during the week, but never contributes during the lesson or sleeps would earn some points, yet still a failing grade of 50/100 at the end of the week. There are 30 name slots, but a few extra could be squeezed in if necessary. Each chart also has a place to record the period and weekly class averages. These charts provide excellent clipboard data that administrators will love!! You might also blow them up into posters and post them on a bulletin board or wall in order to build motivation and/or create a spirit of competition between classes.

This packet allows your students to explore ethics and journalism. Through this activity they view three controversial photographs that were taken and published by professional journalists but stirred up controversy due to the graphic content or story topic. This activity is very thought-provoking and engaging. Students view each photograph, read a short paragraph or two about the context surrounding its taking and publishing, and finally analyze each one for the ethical questions it raises and the aspects that make it controversial. Students then must decide whether or not they would have published each photo themselves as an editor of a major newspaper. A journal reflection prompt and an extension activity are also included. This activity opens up excellent meaningful discussion about moral issues and common ethical dilemmas faced by journalists. It is a great standalone activity for a high school lesson on ethics or it can easily be incorporated into a journalism unit or life skills unit. Moreover, this is an excellent activity for your newspaper staff if you are a newspaper advisor. Help teens explore writing and incorporate it into part of their weekly routine. The packet includes one creative themed prompt for each day of the week - Monday through Friday. Each handout is in full-color and consists of a meaningful picture to go with the day's theme and provide focus, clear directions, lines for drafting and an inspiring quote relatable to the prompt. There are many ways to use this packet. 1. I post each handout on my classroom "Journal Wall" near the students' journals for focus and motivation. 2. For resistant writers who lack motivation or require extra support, these handouts can be given out as a weekly packet for extra credit. 3. If doing a 4-6 week creative writing unit, make these packets part of the students' homework grade. 4. Require students to write a daily journal for the entire year and have the students bind the pages into a creative writing book as a project grade at the end of the year. By using this detailed but time-saving form, teachers can document classroom incidents and gather meaningful data to help improve student behavior and school culture overall.
