Year 2 Plants- Planning and resources Significant scientist study - how did he/she make a contribution to life today? In this lesson children research about the famous scientist Darwin and follow in his footsteps to go on a plant hunt. They match plants to the key from their immediate environment, playground, nature area or the local park. They make notes and annotate their work like Darwin identifying the species of flowers, their shapes, and color, and name. Non-fiction labels and captions or narrative text - familiar settings.Retell and sequence. Describe the main character Sam or Jeremy. Write a list of rules for the bully Jeremy to follow. Write a letter to Sam advising him how to behave if someone is mis treating you or bullying you inside school, in the playground, or out of school. Link the story to Anti bullying week. Make a rosette from Jeremy to Sam as a good will gesture. The main characters (jeremy, sam, old lady, park keeper) can be made into stick puppets to role play the story successfully.

Maths in KS1 This is an excellent resource to secure to addition to 20. The task is designed to encourage speaking in full sentences using sentence stems e.g. There are 2 red cars and 3 blues cars. There are 5 cars altogether. The children can be challenged to show understanding of addition as being commutative - (can be done in any order) - this can also be done by using visuals to represent number sentences where the equals sign is at the front e.g. 5= 3+ 2. Teachers can develop vocabulary by encouraging the use of star words in a full sentence. This is a good resources to use when moving from practical resources to pictorial representations. Excellent and most suitable for EAL and SEN learners. Suitable for Reception EYFS and year 1 working towards.

Year 2 Guided Reading This is a complete 5 week unit of work around the text Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish. It is suited to guided reading taught in a Reciprocal Reading approach. It is also useful to use to practice SATS style questions for Year 2 working at greater depth and within. Also adaptable for year 3. The story is linked to materials, science and rockets, and sustainable environmental issues. It is very suitable for boys because of the dinosaur theme. It is also a good book to use if you are doing a fossils unit or learning about climate change. The questions are written like the Paper SATs method, where there is a short text and then questions to answer below. The other included resources for each week, support additional activities that you may consider doing as a carousel during your guided reading independent work. A character description in week 5 is included to support creative writing opportunities. Definitely a good book to move on reluctant or EAL readers . This is a Tes recommended 5 star resource. Year 2 Writing Narrative Where the Wild Things Are Film and Book Exemplar text to introduce children to narrative writing - called Voyage and Return. Both the film and book are used simultaneously to learn about the main character and write a narrative. An excellent powerpoint with more than 15 slides demonstrates how to write descriptive scenes from the story, a narrative, character traits, and a success ladder. The exemplar text meets the requirements of English New Curriculum objectives. Explicit reference has been made to grammatical features including varying sentence types, conjunctions, words with suffixes, and the use of common exception words. Teachers may use the text in the imitation stage, innovate to where the main character meets a new wild thing, and then invent their own voyage and return narrative. Year 2 Maths - Symmetry This is a fabulous bundle of resources to teach symmetry in Year 2, using 2d regular and irregular shapes. Children first investigate how many lines of symmetry each shape has. They sort them in order one line of symmetry, 2 lines of symmetry or 3 or more lines of symmetry etc. They then move onto reasoning with symmetry in 2d shapes and prove true or false statements such as - do all 4 sided shapes have four lines of symmetry. They show their understanding using APE it- Answer it, prove it and explain it. Following that, children sort shapes into a carrol diagram with given criteria to show a secure understanding of symmetry. The resource shows the subject being studied - the architect Zaha Hadid who designed the Olympic London Aquatic Center. But this can be substituted to any other person or thing. This resources is differentiated for early readers working towards band 2 and fluent readers working at greater depth. The reading also supports writing non-fiction and using ambitious and technical vocabulary as well as grammar features (in particular questions). Writers working at greater depth can add their own exclamatory sentences about each animal. The text is presented interestingly and has clear text and visuals.

Knowing your times tables is essential for securing maths at the expected standard, in the new maths curriculum. This resources will help you to rote learn the 2,3,4,5,6 and 10 times tables with your class. There are differentiated resources to print so that children can practise every day or weekly. The times tables are visually displayed in columns, grid method and for children to fill in empty boxes. This resource is practical and visual for EAL learners to establish good basics maths to lay the foundation of mental maths in year 2 and 3. Most children will be familiar with the 2, 5, 10 times tables, so they can be challenged to use the grids to find the answers to missing numbers e.g 5 x … = 35. They can also move on to the 3, 4, 6, times tables. Daily practice, chanting and oral rehearsing is advocated for all children to be able to count forwards, backwards, in and out of order. A set of handwriting and presentation rules in different styles. There are a set of rules outlined for children to support them with developing neat presentation and move on gradually to cursive handwriting. This is suitable from EYFS to end of KS1 and possibly even year 3 to ensure consistency and progression. There is a selection of handwriting fonts used, depending on if you use a precursive style or not, there should be something in here to suit the requirements of your school. The rules should be introduced early so that all the expectations are made clear. A reminder of application of these skills in English writing books is also useful on an ongoing basis to get well presented work. Must be displayed clearly around the classroom and ideally the rules should be written and practiced into books. This has been a very useful tool in a year 2 classroom to get children to use cursive writing most of the time and consistently.
