Be a Super Hero!

Created as a series of cover work lessons, introductory power point with two student worksheets at the end, to facilitate the designing process. I have also laminated and attached the sheets with split pins for use when there is no IT access. Pupils to consider what they would be like as a Super Hero, design their costume / gadgets etc. Consider who their arch enemy would be, and produce a comic strip adventure. Pupils really enjoyed the work, and the fact that it was a series of lessons, producing some very detailed work. Please review, if you download :-)

Bucket Hat - Textiles

Step by Step photo instructions for pupils to follow to make a reversible bucket hat, in the Lesson Powerpoint. A skills building make for KS3 - KS4 - option to tye dye fabric to make the hat from [ slides 25-30 cover this in the lesson powerpoint.] Or it could be a recycling make using found fabrics; medium weight cottons will give the best finished result. The make links other parts of the specification together,;woven fabric construction, natural fibres and their properties, dye techniques, with joining and making. Keywords highlighted in the step of making. Glossary worksheets to develop Keyword attainment and to allow pupils to demonstrate their knowledge; AFL for teacher to assess individuals understanding. I have used these as starter activities to recall learning in the previous lesson. You could select the words they complete, or let them have free choice. Skills building - Bucket Hat construction record, pupils to complete after each practical lesson to rag rate their outcome. Creating a step-by-step production record to support NEA KS4 work, where they state the steps of making and reflect on the techniques they could improve. This will help focus them on Quality Control outcomes in this and future makes. Summative Assessment Sheet - linked to GCSE 1-9 making grade criteria. This could be self / peer / teacher assessment. Learning Objectives of techniques are listed, I use this to highlight areas not achieved so the pupil can see in ‘pupil speak’ what they could do to further develop their work. The supporting worksheets are proven in my past pupils NEA to develop their skills to be able to be successful. The scaffolding of the sheets allows pupil to record their written content without it feeling like an onerous written task. Knowlege Organiser - Editable if you don’t resist dye the tye dye fabric and need to change the keywords. Powerpoints the text and images are editable. All photographs are my own. A physical paper pattern is not included in the resource - On SLIDE 2 in the LESSON POWERPOINT NOTES there is the LINK to the FREE DOWNLOAD BUCKET HAT PATTERN I used to make the hat in this resource. :-) Please leave a review if you download - to support my development of future resources :-)

A fun way to introduce a topic or use as a revision tool. Distribute cards to pupils and they need to arrange themselves into a circle or line with the cards in the correct order. Could be played as a whole class activity or in small groups at the table.

Whole class activity to help pupils be able to see how they could present a wider range of ideas to show their design development, as they focus on the different graphic components - line / tone / colour / composition / typography / imagery. The pupils need to have started working on their Logo / Design idea, this activity focuses on** client feedback** - introducing that clients can throw curve balls and want to change the direction of work. There are 40 different client feedback prompts - that cover all the graphic components; colour, line, typography, imagery, compostion and tone. Print out the pencil shaped prompts on light card or laminate for longevity, Pupil slide to pause and introduce the client feedback. You can either randomely distribute the pencil prompts or let pupils lucky dip for them. Pupils have loved this activity, you decide how long they have for the pencil prompt before they are returned and redistributed. This allows pupil to develop a wide range of ideas, avoiding fixation. Also can be used for early finishers as a lucky dip extension activity.

** Taking a pupil’s existing design**, this is a workheet that supports them developing their design work to avoid fixation. I used this with a class to prepare them for their exam - NCFE using the activity for them to be able to see how they could present a wider range of ideas to show their design development, as they focus on the different graphic components - line / tone / colour / composition / typography / imagery. The class engaged with his activity really well, using their design ideas from a previous lesson. I printed out the slides A3 and pupils self selected which Logo design they felt they could develop and improve the most. They enjoyed working with someone else’s design idea as a starting point to develop it. The next lesson they returned to their own designs and applied changes to them using the same format.

The Spectacular Spectacle Company - Design and make a pair of novelty spectacles.

A KS2 to KS3 design brief to make a new pair of novelty spectacles. Resources include a power point to step through the research and designing process with supporting worksheet pages for pupils to complete the work on. This was designed by myself for a primary liaison activity and was successfully used across four primary schools, the exemplar work in the power point is by year 9 pupils who trialled the brief. All of the pupils have enjoyed the brief and made excellent outcomes in both the designing and making. This could be used as a sequence of lessons or elements used for stand alone lessons or cover work. Hope you enjoy delivering the content, please leave me feedback so I can continue to develop the resources I produce.

A wordbank in categories to support all Learners literacy; at the designing stage with annotation, plans of production and evaluations. Includes sentence starters and connectives. Some words have images to support pupil understanding; helpful for EAL and SEND pupils. To create the books - print out at A4 sized and cut the page in half vertically. Laminate each page, hole punch and hinge together with a split pin or a keyring. Pupils love these as they aid independance and support their design and written work. Image shown of made book is an older version, and may not be for this design and make brief. Literacy Books link to units of work in my shop.
