NEW AQA Transformers GCSE Lesson

(0)
A fully resourced lesson designed for the new AQA GCSE specification, from an experienced author. This lesson includes editable and PDF versions of: • Power point presentation • Worksheets with full sets of answers • Technician’s sheet (fully resourced and illustrated) • A VLE version of the presentation (with the answers removed) In addition, it includes an optional self-marking Google Classroom Homework for those of you lucky enough to work in a school with Google Classroom set up. Other lessons in this topic are available, as is the topic as a whole. The first lesson “Permanent Magnets” is available free of charge so you can try before you buy. Objectives covered: Lesson 9: PHYSICS ONLY Transformers Explain how the effect of an alternating current in one coil in inducing a current in another is used in transformers. Explain how the ratio of the potential differences across the two coils depends on the ratio of the number of turns on each. Calculate the current drawn from the input supply to provide a particular power output. Apply the equation linking the potential differences and number of turns in the two coils of a transformer to the currents and the power transfer involved, and relate these to the advantages of power transmission at high potential differences. Describe Vs and Vp for a step-up and a step-down transformer. Describe the construction of a transformer.

Recall the factors that affect the direction of the induced potential difference/induced current induced if the conductor is part of a complete circuit. Apply the principles of the generator effect in a given context. Apply the principle that an induced current generates a magnetic field that opposes the original change, either the movement of the conductor or the change in magnetic field.
