Originally delivered to a weak KS4 group, this lesson could be adapted for KS3. Introducing the term 'presentational devices', the lesson explores how this can be applied to media texts, with an analysis of an Oxfam leaflet. With several questions guiding the students to pick out key features, the lesson leads students to write their own analysis of the text. The plenary encourages personal assessment, comparing their own response to a model answer.

Close analysis of extracts from section 5 in 'Of Mice and Men'. Lesson designed for group work, leading to class feedback. The outcome of the lesson is that students should have a detailed set of notes on all sections that have been analysed in the lesson, being able to answer a foreshadowing question at the end.
This lesson encourages close analysis of passages and collaborative learning. The extract booklet is set up for A3 size to allow for notes and group work. It should help prepare students to answer extract-based exam questions.

Chapter 5 extracts - Word document of extracts
Originally delivered to a weak KS4 class, this lesson acts as revision on the themes in 'Of Mice and Men'. Checking understanding of what a theme is, the lesson identifies the themes in the novel, leading to group work where students find evidence of their allocated theme.
Whilst the plenary suggests class feedback, this could be extended for more able students, requiring them to answer a question on one of the selected themes. This task could also be used as a speaking and listening assessment opportunity.

1 or 2 lesson resource, allowing students to practice skills of approaching an unseen poem in their exam. Building on existing knowledge of analysing poetry, this is very much student-led, encouraging the class to work in groups and present their analysis to the rest of the class.
The unseen poem is Duffy's 'War Photographer' and the assessment areas detailed are generic, not specific to any exam board. The lesson builds up to an exam question for students to complete.

The opening slides detail an overview of the exam and what skills are being assessed in this paper.
A generic mark scheme has been included for Section B, Writing, taken from one of AQA’s Paper 1 example papers. Teacher judgement should be used for marking Section A.

A fully planned one-hour lesson, this is linked to the 2017 IGCSE English Literature specification, but could be adapted for other exam boards. Allowing students to initially independently analyse the poem before teacher input, this is an ideal lesson to help build confidence when approaching the unseen paper. The lesson closes with preparing for an exam-style question, which could be completed as a homework task or in a following lesson.

Exploring setting in 'The Secret River', this resource allows students to consider language techniques and how setting is important to the development of the story. Likely to cover two lessons, students work in groups to annotate six different extracts from the novel. It is recommended that the teacher creates a booklet of these settings to allow students to have a comprehensive set of notes and annotations which will be useful for revision purposes. Each extract has line numbers to help with discussions and there is a range to allow access for different abilities.

A one-off lesson exploring John Agard’s ‘Alternative Anthem’. Ideal for KS3 classes, this allows students to recognise the stages of focussed analysis, particularly in preparation for GCSE poetry. Beginning with a post-it note driven class discussion on questions the students have about the poem, the lesson moves to independent group work. Students are given an area to focus on before feeding back ideas to the class. The plenary PEE task can easily be extended for more able/older students.

17 lessons, fully planned on the novel, ‘Private Peaceful’. Scheme of work covers a range of reading and writing skills which can be easily adapted to suit different KS3 abilities.
Lessons include: creating a research booklet, writing a news broadcast, comparison with Owen’s ‘Dulce et Decorum est’ and a job advert task. There are several opportunities for Reading and Writing assessments, with a main Reading assessment task at the end of the scheme. There is also a S&L role play task, to allow teacher’s to formally assess if required.
Each lesson is fully planned with learning objectives and starter tasks with some Homework activities already planned. There is a covering slide for each lesson for the teacher’s reference, detailing a rough lesson outline, any resources required and whether Homework has been set. Finally there are suggestions on how to create a classroom display from this unit.

Covering 'Poppies' by Jane Weir, in preparation for the Power and Conflict theme for AQA English Literature Paper 2, this PowerPoint explores the poem in detail. Allowing some independent analysis initially, the lesson leads towards writing an extended reading analysis of the text. This is a multi-faceted lesson and there are practice questions for both Paper 2 and English Language Paper 1, Section B (Writing).
Mark schemes and AOs have been included in the PowerPoint to enable students to become familiar with these and help plan their responses.
Due to the nature of the tasks, it is expected this PowerPoint will cover at least two 1-hour sessions or these activities could be adapted for extended homework responses.

The sources for the third paper are extracts from Peter Kay and Obama's autobiographies, with the writing section creating a speech to describe a vivid memory.

Based on the 2015 specimen papers, this is a mock iGCSE English Language Paper 2 (intended for 2017 examination). Using extracts from 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' and 'The Red Room', the questions follow the same format as to be expected in the 2-hour English Language exam.
A generic mark scheme has been included to provide guidance on skills demonstrated for questions 1, 2 and 3b.
Ideal resource to use in-class as a mock assessment or one that students could complete for homework.

Three lessons with three different unseen poetry texts to help students prepare for this section of the exam. Generic assessment areas and timings are referred to, but these can be easily adapted to suit your exam board.
These lessons encourage independent work before teacher direction and all lead towards beginning to write a response to a example exam question. These can then be extended for homework tasks, further class time or formal assessment pieces.

Practice questions for the iGCSE English Core Reading Paper 1, using an extract from 'Frankenstein' as stimulus. This selection of questions follows a similar structure and wording as a typical iGCSE paper, but just uses one text - ideal for students getting started in preparation for the exam.
Mark schemes are included for both the Reading and Writing questions: the Reading answers are suggested as guidance and do not necessarily include all possible answers. The Writing mark scheme is taken directly from the Core mark scheme guidance and can be applied to this resource.
Resource will allow students to work through practice questions, both independently and with teacher direction. The starter task allows students to understand the stimulus extract and ask questions about unknown words, for what is a potentially challenging text.

This resource is a mock-up of the iGCSE English Core paper, using 'Touching the Void' and 'Saharan Survival' as the stimulus extract. The PowerPoint contains the questions to enable you to work through them as a class and is divided into two lessons. The first lesson is wholly on the Reading element of the English paper. The second lesson focuses on creative writing with opening slides encouraging students to enhance writing and techniques they can include in their work. It also details the assessment areas for the Writing element of the English paper, encouraging the students to plan their response to the 15 mark question.
This resource has been used to help prepare students for their iGCSE English Core paper using similar wording to the actual exam. The mark scheme for the Reading paper is a suggestion of responses; the Writing mark scheme is taken from the iGCSE paper and can be generically applied to this resource.

Activities within this scheme include analysing Bill Bryson extracts in preparation for a unit reading assessment; writing in the style of Bill Bryson for writing evidence; comparing Bear Grylls with Michael Palin; and writing a series of blog entries based on an extreme travel adventure.
Whilst this scheme refers to Reading and Writing APP assessments, this can easily be adapted to suit the assessments in your department.
