KS3/GCSE Maths Constructing and Solving Linear Equations Whole Lesson

(0)
A comprehensive Powerpoint for a whole lesson on constructing and solving linear equations for KS3 and GCSE foundation groups. Depending on the ability of the class, there is enough material on the Powerpoint for a couple of lessons if pupils need to be taken through the content more gradually. In the Powerpoint, pupils are introduced to the meaning of key words such as co-efficient, linear and equation, shown how to solve equations using the balance method and also how to construct and solve a linear equation when given information. There are plenty of worked examples and questions for pupils to attempt.
GCSE Maths Higher Areas of Triangles Investigation

GCSE Maths Higher Areas of Triangles Investigation

(1)
Teacher notes on an investigation on areas of triangles, also covering topics such as simplifying surds, Pythagoras’ Theorem, congruency and algebraic formulae. The problem the students must solve is ‘When the perimeter of a triangle is 20 cm and it is an isosceles triangle, how many possible triangles can there be?’. Students find this out through working out the area of each possible triangle and seeing a pattern. An extension is also included in this resource which gets pupils to work out the total possible number of any triangle (not just isosceles) with a perimeter of 20 cm. Students then work to find a link between the base length of the triangle and the number of possible triangles which can be drawn with that base length. A worksheet is included for each activity as well as notes and guidance on how to conduct the investigation with pupils.

Blooms' Thinking Hats Learning Mat

(0)
A great resource for secondary school students to help them think reflectively and promote higher-order thinking skills in any subject. This learning mat summarises the 6 thinking hats, defining them for pupils and giving them ideas on how they can apply them to the work or activity they’re completing. In my practice at schools I’ve had my students keep these learning mats on their desk whilst they are completing their work (especially group work, writing and critical thinking tasks), often encouraging them to consult them in order to get more thoughtful responses from. them.

Huge Set of KS3 Fractions Starters

(0)
This is a very useful resource with starters on KS3 fraction topics: finding fraction of an amount, converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions and HCF/LCM. These are useful to introduce a topic or to act as ‘settlers’ to get pupils on task when they enter the classroom.

Student Template for Comparing University Courses

Student Template for Comparing University Courses

(0)
A handy pair of tables that sixth form students can use to compare both university courses and the actual universities themselves. This would be a very useful resource to assist with their UCAS applications in helping them to decide which course (and university) is right for them out of their choices and help them make an informed decision. The template on the courses allows aspects such as the length of the course, average class size, teaching/assessment methods, tuition fees and course content to be compared whilst the template comparing universities allows variables such as ranking, number of students, graduate employability, course satisfaction and extra-curricular facilities to be cross-referenced.
Football Scores Investigation (GCSE Maths Probability)
samcurran1samcurran1

Football Scores Investigation (GCSE Maths Probability)

(1)
This is an investigation (including teacher notes and worksheets) which is suitable for GCSE maths students, though higher ability KS3 students should be able to complete it. The problem students have to answer is ‘Can you find a formula to find out the total possible number of half-time scores if you know the full-time score of a football match?’ Probability is the main topic covered (listing outcomes, formula for total number of outcomes) as well as algebra topics such as expanding brackets, sequences, factorising and generalising formulae. Pupils can probably work on this independently with some teacher input in setting up the investigation and prompting pupils.

KS4 Maths Triangular Numbers Investigation

(1)
This resource gets students to investigate how to find a formula for the triangular numbers through the investigating the number of football teams play each other in a round robin. This resource is suitable for GCSE students and more able KS3 students. Students are then guided through an investigation to see a step-by-step derivation for the algebraic nth term for the sequence of triangular numbers. This would be an excellent way of introducing how to find the nth term of quadratic sequences as pupils will be familiar with the triangular numbers sequence.
