Rounding to 10/100/1000 Card Game

(1)
This game allows children to practice rounding to 10/100/1000. Give each pair a sheet of cards, cut up. They should make two separate piles; one of the smaller cards and one of the larger cards. For each turn, the player turns over one small card and one large card, and completes the task, e.g. Small card = 637 Large card = Round to the nearest 10 Answer = 640. Replace the cards to the bottom of the piles and repeat with the other player.

WAGOLL Newspaper

(17)
This is a WAGOLL newspaper article, written using the beginning of the story of Kensuke's Kingdom (by Michael Murpurgo), but could be used as an example for any newspaper writing unit. Possible uses: - to annotate features of a newspaper - as a model for writing own newspaper articles - to critique - what is good and not-so-good about this article? P.s. The family is not called 'Finnegan' in Kensuke's Kingdom - we are not told their surname so I made one up!

Word of the Day - Part 3

'Writing like a writer' is a set of Powerpoint slides, each featuring a new word of the day. The purpose of this resource is to broaden the children's vocabulary and is aimed at KS2/lower KS3. The document displays the word, definition and example as well as a short writing task and there are 30 slides (enough for 6 weeks if used daily). The tasks are designed to be creative writing opportunities and so are very varied in theme! The word of the day does not necessarily 'fit' with the writing task, but as the children build up their vocabulary bank they should be able to use previous words to enhance their short piece of writing. This activity is designed to take about 10 minutes, and so can be used as a starter or daily activity during an allocated slot, e.g. register time. The way I have used this in the past is: - introduce the word, children repeat it aloud a few times - explain the definition and read through the example - children write down the word and the meaning in a vocabulary book - children complete the writing task, trying to use the new word or one of the previous words. Library Challenge Cards

Library Challenge Cards

(31)
These ‘Library Challenge’ cards were made for my class library, but they could be used in a school library as well. The idea was just to get the children excited about reading and properly engaged with the books, and they’ve really enjoyed working through the activities – an added bonus being that I use this work to decorate the walls of our library. There’s a selection of 10 Library Challenge Cards, plus a ‘Library Challenge of the Week’ which just allows for changing things up a little without having to print and laminate more cards.
