Complete 1 hour lesson to cover optical isomers, chiral carbons, polarised light, racemic mix and 3D drawings. The lesson includes a flipped learning worksheet that can be given to pupils for homework the previous lesson. If you do not use this, it is not a problem as the powerpoint covers everything. The homework could also be done after the lesson to recap. The powerpoint explains chirality with examples, questions and a video. The lesson finishes with a loop game.

Aliphatic organic synthesis for OCR A 2015 onwards complete lesson

I was not satisfied with the synthesis route diagrams provided in the textbooks so I made my own. The poster summaries all the reactions from AS and A2 organic chemistry. Extra versions are provided with some details missing for pupils to fill in. Then a white board quiz allows pupils to practice different reactions and synthesis routes and a card sort allows them to create a large synthesis map from memory. This tried and tested lesson was a hit with my students. Aromatic synthesis lesson to follow.

A2 Module 6.2 revision flashcards for new OCR spec 2015 onwards

Flashcards summarising the whole of Chapter 6.2 (Nitrogen compounds, Polymers and Synthesis). Pupils often waste a lot of time making flashcards so I decided to make them for them. Idea for use: Print one set per pupil and let them cut them out. Ask them to sort them to sort them into three piles - green (good understanding), amber (some understanding) and red (no understanding). For every hour they spend revising, they should spend 30 minutes on red cards, 20 minutes on amber cards and 10 minutes on green cards. As they become more confident with red they can move to amber and from amber to green. Check back soon for more flashcards.

Bond Enthalpies for AQA GCSE Chemistry

A clear and easy way for pupils to learn about bond enthalpies. Before teaching this lesson you need to have covered exothermic and endothermic reactions as well as calorimetry. The lesson includes a loop game starter to recap prior knowledge, explanation with animation, examples and questions for calculating bond enthalpies. Although created for GCSE, it would be a suitable introduction for AS students as well. You will need molymods and board pens. Calculators optional.

Testing for Ions game, card sort and worksheet for new OCR A Chemistry A Level

Cluedo-style game in which pupils try to identify the name of their neighbour's ionic compound using the results of chemical tests. My Year 13s found this game very engaging and did not want to stop playing! The resource also includes a summary of all the ions tests that they need to know, a blank copy of the summary for pupils to complete from memory and a card sort. Can be used for both AS and A2.

Very engaging lesson, includes game, practical, assessment and differentiated tasks. I was observed teaching this lesson for AQA C3 a couple of years ago and was graded outstanding. The lesson takes 2 hours so you can split it at a point that you feel appropriate (our school does 2 hour lessons as standard). All explanations for activities can be found in the notes underneath the slide, along with picture and video credits. I am working on a full SOW for the new AQA spec so check back soon. Please leave feedback. Complete chapter 4.1 can be found here for only £5: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/complete-sow-for-new-aqa-chemistry-syllabus-chapter-4-1-atomic-structure-and-the-periodic-table-11296756

Sewage Game - the journey of a poo. For new AQA GCSE syllabus

An engaging game to make a dull topic more interesting! Pupils are given a fact sheet to read about sewage, knowing they will need to answer questions on what they are reading. They then progress around the board, answering questions about different stages of sewage treatment in order to move their counter. A great way to revise the content - or even to teach it for the first time. This compliments my lesson on sewage which can be found here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/treating-waste-water-complete-lesson-about-sewage-for-new-aqa-chemistry-sow-2016-onwards-11397971 Buy as a bundle for £5 here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/sewage-complete-lesson-and-game-11613959

Deforestation Scenario game for AQA GCSE Biology and Science Trilogy

This engaging game was a hit with my class. You can use this game to teach about the reasons and consequences for deforestation. The class are given the following scenario: “You form the government of a small country that contains a large rainforest. Due to years of war and instability, the country is not popular with tourists. With very few other industries, the country is running out of money. All that you have is forest so you will need to decide whether to sell a portion. Whenever you sell forest, cross off the squares you have sold on your forest board using a marker pen. You have been borrowing money from other countries and have a debt of £2 000 000 which needs to be paid by the end of the game.” They will then work in small groups to make as much money as possible from their rainforest. There will be consequences for their team depending on how much rainforest they choose to sell. They will learn about the reasons behind deforestation and the problems it creates. Follow up questions are included.
