Naming organic substances 1

A simple worksheet on IUPAC nomenclature. A set of simple rules, followed by nine questions (branched chain alkanes and alkenes) over two sides. With separate answers sheet. First of a series.
Free radical substitution dance.

Free radical substitution dance.

Reaction mechanisms are beautiful dances, with the dancing atoms throwing out two (heterolytic ) or one (homolytic) arms out to their partner. Thus, I added a little beat to this reaction mechanism.
Cut & Stick reaction mechanisms

Cut & Stick reaction mechanisms

5 Resources
Sixth formers love cut & stick exercises. They are valuable because they familiarise the student with the mechanism, they promote discussion when done in groups, and are different to taking notes and practical work.
Reaction mechanism cut&stick nucleophilic addition

Reaction mechanism cut&stick nucleophilic addition

(0)
An introductory sheet of answers, followed by cut and stick exercise for this challenging mechanism. Cut and stick promotes familiarity with the mechanism, promotes discussion when done in groups, and is enjoyed immensely by sixth formers.

Bond Fission cartoon

I have made a little interactive cartoon thingy to reinforce or introduce the two types of bond fission, heterolysis and homolysis. Just click on the bond fission html file and it opens in your browser. You can make it huge using the browser zoom controls. 19.9.19- apologies the file previously uploaded was done in error. It should now work Please note: in order to provide a rich interactive experience, my interactive resources are mini-web sites local to your computer. After unzipping, they comprise a folder containing the main .html file and another folder containing the graphic resources and my coding to make the resource work. Double click on the .html file and the resource will work. If, however , you move or delete any of the files from this hierarchy, the resource will not work. stdobbs.com ©D&D production
Nucleophilic substitution mechanism cut'n'stick.

Nucleophilic substitution mechanism cut'n'stick.

(0)
A cut and stick exercise to help reinforce this very important concept. Students cut out the pieces and arrange the pieces to give the correct mechanism. Prepares students for those five mark questions where they often lose marks. Other mechanisms to come plus drag and drop versions, so watch this space…

A simple cartoon with half equations. Electrode labels now correct! I have now added positive charges to the hydrogen atom cores/hydrogen ions. The you tube version adds a funky beat.
End of term Science crossword

End of term Science crossword

A little bit of ‘learning without working’ activity for the end of term, in black and white for easy cheap photocopying. Suitable for all abilities, but earlier years may need to look some clues up. The answers are included.

Rate of reaction with a gas syringe simulation.

I have made a simulation of the marble chips and acid experiment at four different concentrations of acid. Just double click on the “gas syringe.html” file and it will open in your web browser. You could use browser zoom controls to make it huge if you wish. Maybe take measurements of volume of gas evolved against time or just use to introduce the experiment or revise. ( the price for this could save your department many times in broken gas syringes.) The disappearing cross experiment simulation

I have made a simulation of this experiment at four different temperatures. Double click on the “disappearing cross copy.html” file and there it is in your web browser. Students time the cross disappearing, after someone presses the button and shouts go. Saves a nasty experiment with hot solutions and sulfur dioxide. Use over and over again. You can make it huge by using the browser zoom controls. A preview is available on my web site. After unzipping, they comprise a folder containing the main .html file and another folder containing the graphic resources and my coding to make the resource work.
