I have been teaching over 15 years with 13 years experience in Year 6. I lead English and Maths and support numerous schools with T&L and leadership. Children I work with are EAL, SEN, G&T and are from a diverse background. I adore my job and try to find ways for the children to thrive.

This resource includes 6 weeks planning for Guided Reading. For each week, it allows for a test per week (one lesson), working through the test (one lesson) and three days of whole class shared reading. This process follows the Mastery approach for whole class, using support for those who need it, with greater depth questions for those moving on.
It follows 2 weeks on newspapers (using First News) and 4 weeks using Kensuke's Kingdom. There is a presentation for each day, using Activinspire (this can be downloaded for free by simply searching on Google, if you do not have it). Each presentation begins with an extract and a 'general' question to discuss and answer. Followed by support questions and then greater depth thinking. I have used this with my Y6 and the progress by all has been remarkable.
This PowerPoint (also given in Activinspire format) is used as a staff INSET to support staff in delivering effective GR sessions. There is a section on how to use PEE (point, evidence and explanation), which could also be used with children. Some pictures can be changed according to age. The extract has been taken from 'The Magic Finger' copyright to R Dahl.
A one page knowledge organiser to support the children when studying the novel ‘Stig of the Dump’ by Clive King.
It contains key information, quotes, vocabularya nd discussion points to support children in developing a deeper understanding of the novel.
This knowledge organiser is based on the novel ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo. It contains all key information, vocabulary and discussions needed for children to gain a deeper understanding of the themes related to this book. Perfect for revision.
A knowledge organiser based on the novel ‘The Midnight Fox’ by Betsy Byars to support children in studying the novel at a deeper level. It includes key vocabulary, themes, quotes and challenging vocabulary covered in the book.
This knowledge organiser is based upon the novel ‘Skellig’ by David Almond. It contains the key information, vocabulary and discussion points related to the novel, which supports the children in developing a greater understanding of the story.
A ‘knowledge organiser’ to support the children when studying the novel ‘Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. It includes key vocabulary, quotes, discussion points ets, which enable the children to unpick themes in the book at a deeper level. Used in KS2 in my school.
A knowledge organiser based on the novel ‘Charlotte’s Web’ by E.B.White to support children in studying the novel at a deeper level. It includes key vocabulary, themes, quotes and challenging vocabulary covered in the book.
This planning was used post SATs as part of the children's transition work. If focuses on 13 lessons (depending on lesson lengths) and cover cross curricular. The children loved the novel and this planning helped to look at key themes which arose.
All planning needed for Y6 writing. For many of the units, the resources are included too (Activinspire flipcharts are used for lesson presentations). Many of the genres are based around a class novel. I used the planning in my current Y6 as follows:
Aut 1: Narratives using ‘Skellig’ and WW1 Poetry using 'Dulce Et Decorum Est’
Aut 2: Planning only
Newspapers based on ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and persuasive writing
Spring 1: Historical narratives and Diaries based on 'Once’
Spring 2: Reports and Discussions based on 'Holes’
Summer 1: Rap Poetry based on 'Coraline’
Britain Since 1948 - SATs TA assessment unit
Summer 2: The unforgotten Coat
This Y6 Leavers Assembly is based upon the show 'This is Your Life' - using the duo Ant and Dec as presenters. Their lines are written in Geordie. The script follows 2 children dressed as the Head and Deputy, meeting the class from that year.
This resource includes the full script and the matching PowerPoint - you will just need to add each child's recording.
This resource includes questions for the whole of the book ‘Skellig’ - I have used these questions in Guided and Shared Reading, homework and intervention groups.
As the chapters are quite short, there are on average 4-6 questions per chapter (obviously some have more).
Answers will vary based on the evidence a child provides, therefore this only includes questions.
This resource includes 30 of the spellings from the Y5-6 spelling list, with fun prompts to help remember spelling rules/patterns. I have used it as a display with my children and they loved it. It could also be minimised to go in trays for those who need it.
This is an article on Donald Trump from the Guardian dated 7.1.19. The related questions are 1-3 marks and include the mark scheme. This is suitable for Y6 preparing for SATs or children in Y7-8, as the text is challenging in vocabulary and content.
This resource is a display I have used in my classroom (Y6) to encourage the children to write more formally - like a text rather than spoken language. It includes 4 examples (both fiction and non-fiction) showing the children how spoken language can change to ‘text’ language. This has worked incredibly well developing their writing for the KS2 SATs.
This is a support mat for children to use when writing (or as a display poster) which will help the children develop the cohesiveness of their writing. It states down strategies to use, examples of each and then the impact this has on the reader. This is aimed at KS2/3 children
This can be used by subject leaders of anyone carrying out a Guided REading Scrutiny. It can obviously be adapted according to school ethos/practices, as it is generic.
This booklet can be used for revision, homework or even interventions.
It contains a Reading section (fiction, non-fiction and poetry) which total 50 marks. It then contains a GPS section on some of the trickier topics. Then an Arithmetic test (20 marks), in line with the SATs test. Finally some Reasoning questions relating to the trickier topics.
I used this as homework, then went through it as interventions.
This PowerPoint leads the children through two extracts from classics (Lord of the Flies and Treasure Island) - there are questions linked to the texts (including vocabulary choices, inference, and summarising the text). Prompts then follow to allow children the chance to still work independently, with clues to the mark allocations. There then follows the mark scheme. This process is repeated for both extracts. There are also two ‘Going deeper’ questions.
I have used this with my children in class with great success.
Due to the complexity of the text, this can be used with older children.
This resource includes the teacher text examples I use in class with my Y6 children for a variety of genres:
poetry
persuasion (animal testing)
discussion (should robots replace teachers)
report writing (snake)
newspaper (linked to Kensuke’s Kingdom)
Diary (linked to ‘Once’)
Historical story: setting and characterisation (linked to ‘Once’)
Contemporary narrative: setting and characterisation (linked to Skellig)
