All planning needed for Y6 writing. For many of the units, the resources are included too (Activinspire flipcharts are used for lesson presentations). Many of the genres are based around a class novel. I used the planning in my current Y6 as follows:

Aut 2: Planning only
Newspapers based on ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and persuasive writing
Spring 1: Historical narratives and Diaries based on 'Once’
Spring 2: Reports and Discussions based on 'Holes’
Summer 1: Rap Poetry based on 'Coraline’
Britain Since 1948 - SATs TA assessment unit
Summer 2: The unforgotten Coat
Three weeks of planning (4 days a week as 1 day was taken with drama activities) - based on the novel 'Kensuke's Kingdom'. Used in Y6, however can be adapted for Y5 or Y7
This resource was used for my Y6 class: it includes 2 weeks worth of planning and the accompanying Activinspire flipcharts and planning proformas. It is based on the novel 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. With adaptation, can be used with Lower KS3

It also includes some preparation questions and follow-up activities. The texts and questions are aimed at Upper KS2 or Lower KS3.
The novels included:
The Animals of Farthing Wood
The Secret Garden
Face
The Fastest Boy in the World
This includes 3 weeks planning on historical diaries and all resources, including Activinspire flipcharts for each lesson. It is based on the stunning novel 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman about WW2 and a child fleeing to find his parents. Many resources refer to My Secret War Diary, which is excellent for using extracts.
This was aimed at my Y6 class, however can be used with Y5 or Y7+ if needed. The work produced by my class was stunning and the children fell in love with the novel.
This unit is based upon the novel Once by Morris Gleitzman and includes 3 weeks planning and resources to teach lessons. It was aimed at Y6 - however could be used with Y5 or Y7. The attached presentations are using Activinspire.
The 'settings' lesson received an outstanding from an Ofsted Inspector.
This novel is absolutely spectacular and captured the hearts of my children.
This pack was aimed at Y5 during the summer holidays, however it could be adapted slightly for Y3-6. It consists of various activities including maths, spellings, descriptive writing and geography. It is meant to be fun to engage the children (e.g. wordsearch and time tables raps). Each task is awarded points (thus ensuring all children in the class can access it) which children accumulate during the pack to obtain broze, silver, gold or platinum award....you can decide whether you give any prizes in return.
A Guided Reading lesson using extracts from the novel 'Matilda'. There is an introduction PowerPoint to share with the class, which introduces them to the concept of PEE (point, evidence and explanation), followed by an example.
There are 3 differentiated comprehensions. This would ideally be used in KS2
All extracts are copyright to Roald Dahl
These writing medium term plans are for Years 1 to Y6. They include a recommended class novel for each half term, links to Science Geography/History. All planning is in line with the new 2014 curriculum.
A selection of challenging vocabulary (to place on your display) with definitions, which challenges the children to use more complex choices. I have used it this year in my class and the impact on the children's writing was immediate. During an observation by an OFSTED inspection, it was high lighted as a really strength.
The topics links to class novels and include: narratives, discussions, persuasion, poetry (rap and WW1), newspapers, reports and Britain Since 1948.
The vocabulary links to both the writing genre and the medium (class novel).
Class novels include: Skellig, Kensuke's Kingdom, Holes, Coraline and Once.
These topics covered my whole year's teaching.
This Transition Pack can be used with Year 6 children preparing for their move to secondary school. It can be teacher led, using discussions with the children about their worries and also things they are excited about.
This is the script and resources for a Y6 assembly based on the TV programme 'The Apprentice'. It includes the script and suggested words for 2 songs. The script has some 'in house jokes' that can be easily adapted. It includes several tasks which should be completed before the assembly, with photos or videos shown as evidence e.g. cooking cakes for profit and producing a school prospectus. The children in my class loved performing this assembly.
This PowerPoint includes helpful hints and reminders about the key areas which the Y6 children will be tested on for the Grammar SATs test. It includes questions from past years, with related prompts.
This is a revision guide for Y6 children preparing for the Arithmetic test (SATs). It can be used in the days before as a last minute guide to the four calculations, BODMAS, percentages and fractions. My class found it very useful, and I shall use it again over the next few days.
This assembly is based around the Oscars. Each child will win an award and give a speech. It includes a full script and PowerPoint to accompany it. There is also a voting form for the children in class (based on 28) to vote for their nominations - you may want to 'change some' to ensure all children win one award (e.g. best sportsman or funniest).
For the PowerPoint, you will just need to add in the nominations photos and names.
On the script names will need to be added. The children all get to see their nominations (approximately 3 each), when preparing, however they don't get to find out which award they have won until the assembly (all winning names should be placed in envelopes). I have written 'child 1' etc in the script, so this may need adapting to ensure the right children win appropriate awards, as ours did. The script also includes various famous people (children dressed up) giving the awards (eg the Queen).
Our children loved this assembly - being nominated and giving speeches.
A 4 week unit of work based upon Graffiti. This includes the 4 lesson plans, which take up a half day session (can spend longer than 4 weeks if taught in shorter blocks).
It leads the children through the process of using graffiti and is linked to Black History Month
This resource is great to use as writing evidence for Teacher Assessments, using the History Topic 'Britain Since 1948'. It is cross curricular, however it will focus on the writing aspect. The lessons can be used for whole morning sessions, with links to videos and websites to gather evidence. There are 7 lessons, however longer can be spent if needed. It covers a range of genres including discussions, diaries, sports articles and newspapers. All resources are including, including the 'Activinspire' charts linked to each day.
