Do you have Peer mentors or Peer Mediators in your school…If not, then why not?
Peer Mentors can offer another layer of support for your Pastoral System in any educational setting; You will find that if the Mentors/Mediators become embedded as part of your Pastoral System, then other students will generally respond very well to them.
If students are trained correctly and they are given the responsibility and trust to work with younger students they can become an invaluable team in your school.
This support pack offers guidance and advice for your Mentors/Mediators as they move forward in their role; it gives advice on how to run a meeting, it identifies key questions to ask and key words to use alongside tips on problem solving.
I wrote this resource once I had trained up the Mentors in my Centre and they commented it gave them useful support in their role.

This is Part 3 of 3 Behaviour Support Programmes for Students.
The BSP Part 3 is a module of work that can be used with students who are at risk of FTE or indeed have received multiple FTE previously. I am presently working with a student who regularly struggles to engage, therefore any evidence of his learning is important.
I have compiled an evidence folder to help collate his work, but in addition I have designed this log to record any learning he may achieve and if possible to support the recording of his thoughts and opinions regarding his work; the evidence log may indeed be completed by his key worker.

This can be used by staff supporting the induction of new students or indeed by admin staff who support the collation of information on new students - Once completed this is a useful document to share with key staff who work with the student.

Using positive language is a feature of good classroom/behaviour management. This resource identifies both unhelpful phrases and statements and then a preferred way that uses positive language, that may initiate a better response from the student.
This resource guides staff into using appropriate questioning to help re-focus student attention - this was used as part of staff training to help my teams take more responsibility in the classroom for low level disruption, instead of referring the behaviour on to pastoral staff - this resource links to ‘Using the Levels of Behaviour’ and ‘Classroom Procedures’.
The procedures identified on this flow chart were the ones I put in place in my school to track student absence. The effective monitoring of such protocols will depend on the effectiveness of your tutor team, alongside good communication with the Attendance Manager.
Such tracking is vital due to increased levels of absence because of Covid 19 and the increased vulnerability of young people, especially those in Special Education.
A Learning Diary that enables any student or teacher the ability to monitor and track evidence of student work; this Learning Diary proved to be a very useful document in my School, to help record the successes of a student who could not engage fully in a mainstream curriculum. However, the student was an excellent citizen around the school, who developed his abilities through engagement of non-academic work which we needed to record.
The Diary/Log can also be used in formal lesson for students to record evidence of their work - the format of the template allows for this flexibility.
