New Zealand Essential Spelling Words (Lists 1-8) - Board Game
New Zealand Essential Spelling Lists 1-7 (+ commonly misspelt words).
A fun board game to help your students learn their spelling words. The variety of boards will give them a sense of choice and will help to keep them motivated to play. The cute graphics are bound to appeal to both you and your students.
Included:
♦ 6 different game boards in 3 different styles (click on ‘preview’ above to see them all). All have a penguin theme.
♦ Word lists.
♦ Blank template to make up your own word lists (if necessary)
♦ Reference chart for students (homonym/homophone words that they will need to put in a sentence).
How to play:
A game for 2 or more players. Roll the dice and move your counter around the board. You will land on a coloured square. Another player will ask you to spell a word from that colour group from the essential spelling list that you are currently learning. You can spell the word out loud, or write it on a piece of paper. If you spell the word correctly, you receive one point. The winner is the player who reaches a predetermined number (eg 20 points), or whoever has the most points after an allocated time.
Your students can play this game with anyone! Players do not need to be playing against others on the same word list.
Great for daily 5, literacy centres, word study, early finishers, wet day games, etc.
This game can easily be adapted to any spelling words. You will just have to write them on the blank template that is provided. Easy!
Designed on A3 size paper.

Classroom Rights and Responsibilities – Back to School
An effective activity for your students when you are setting up your classroom culture at the beginning of the year. Something a little different to the standard ‘classroom rules’ discussions.
The activity focuses on 4 RIGHTS that your students have at school:
♦ We have the right to learn at school.
♦ We have the right to use school property.
♦ We have the right to be safe at school (physical wellbeing).
♦ We have the right to feel happy at school (emotional wellbeing).
Students brainstorm their responsibilities as a class and write them in the individual honeycomb cell templates. These cells are then cut out and arranged around the ‘rights’ templates. You can add as many honeycomb cells as you wish. Blank cells can be included to fill sections if necessary.
This makes an effective wall display that can be referred to (and added to) throughout the year.
Examples of responsibilities:
♦ We have the right to learn at school – ask for help when I need it.
♦ We have the right to use school property - put equipment away when I have finished with it.
♦ We have the right to be safe at school – don’t throw things in the classroom.
♦ We have the right to feel happy at school - share things with others.
Lists of examples are included to help you guide your students through the discussion / brainstorm sessions.
With your students thinking of the responsibilities and writing them in kid speak, they will take more ownership of the classroom culture than if you just display a list of ‘classroom rules’ on the wall.
An optional activity is also included. It is another template that says ‘We agree to be responsible’. Your students sign their name in a honeycomb cell, cut it out and place it around the centre template.
Included:
♦ Teacher notes and layout examples.
♦ Examples of responsibilities
♦ Student brainstorm pages
♦ 4 ‘rights’ templates (1 per page, colour)
♦ Honeycomb cell templates (6 per page, black/white)
♦ Definition strips of ‘rights’ and ‘responsibilities’ (blank ones also provided so you can write your own meanings of the words).
♦ Additional optional template – ‘We agree to be responsible’
I have also included an editable honeycomb cell template (Powerpoint file). This gives you the option of typing the 'responsibilities' rather than writing them by hand.
Provided in 2 different paper sizes:
♦ A4 paper size
♦ Letter paper size
Keywords: rules, rights, responsibilities, charter, treaty, expectations, procedures, behaviour management, classroom culture, beginning of the year, back to school.

MATARIKI - Star Craft with Facts
Are you looking for a great activity for teaching your students some knowledge about Matariki (the Māori New Year)?
This is an engaging activity that will look great in your classroom. Your students will colour/decorate a star template (2x A4 size pages) and then cut and glue it to reveal a fact about Matariki behind the ‘flaps’. There are 30 different facts which will hopefully allow a different fact for each student in your class.
After constructing the stars, your students can orally share their fact with the class to help build knowledge about Matariki.
The stars can be pinned to the wall or you can hang them to create a fabulous galaxy!
Some precision is required with cutting and gluing. If you have younger students, you may like to buddy them up with an older class (great for fostering the tuakana-teina relationship).
Included:
♦ Instructions that are easy-to-follow (pictures included).
♦ List of the 30 facts.
♦ Template – front of the star
♦ Template – back of the star (with fact) x30
Examples of the Facts:
♦ Matariki is a cluster of stars that disappears below the horizon in April and reappears in late May or early June.
♦ If you drove to the Matariki stars in a car at a speed of 100 km/hr, you would arrive in 4.8 billion years!
♦ The stars of Matariki were used by the crews of voyaging waka as a navigational aid to guide them across the Pacific Ocean.
♦ It is now thought that there are 9 stars (rather than 7) in the Matariki star cluster. Their names are: Uru-ā-rangi, Waitī, Waitā, Tupu-ā-rangi, Tupu-ā-nuku, Matariki, Waipuna-ā-rangi, Pōhutukawa, Hiwa-i-te-rangi.
Many of these facts will be a great starting point for a topic of inquiry.
