A series of lesson resources designed for upper key stage 2 based on 1,001 Arabian Nights (Geraldine McCaughrean) in which the children write frame stories based on the story of Sinbad the Sailor. These lessons have been designed to be used in conjunction with the book itself, and you will need access to a copy of the book. This resource includes a powerpoint that takes you through creating descriptive language, writing a character description and then planning and drafting a frame story. Within the powerpoints are model texts for the character description and the frame story to support the children in their writing. Also included are two word banks to be used for the character description and the frame story.

A PowerPoint and planning for a series of short grammar lessons (25-30 minutes) that would support in the production of a non-chronological report based on rainforest animals. Aimed at year 5. Grammar features included are: commas and semi-colons in a list, relative clauses, subordinate clauses, dashes, hyphenated words and parenthesis. Examples of each feature are given and opportunities to identify and practice using them.

A PowerPoint introducing similes, metaphors and personification using the description of King Shahryar. This works best alongside the book 1,001 Arabian Nights (by Geraldine McCaughrean). Examples of similes, metaphor and personification are given from the opening chapter and the children have to identify which they are. Then they can try to create their own.

This pack contains 6 sets of comprehension resources. Each set is based around a different reading skill (inference, retrieval, prediction, vocabulary, explanation) except for the last which is a mixture. Each set contains 5 or 6 short extracts with questions that can either be used as short reading tasks, part of an intervention or as a whole class reading lesson with the accompanying PowerPoint.
