Although this movie is almost 80 years it is amazing that the director Frank Capra, and the writers were able to create something that is still capture’s students attention and is highly educational. Note: The final essay question requires background knowledge of Don Quixote or a brief reading of a summary of the the story, as students are asked to compare Mr. Smith to Don Quixote. Compare how kids are raised in the ‘civilization’ to how kids are raised today. Explore the concepts of pain, conditioning and promiscuity as virtue. Finally identify the effects of ‘soma’ on the civilization and possible replacements for ‘soma’ today. Please take note that this is the 1998 TV version of the film. I’d strongly advise checking out the IMDb parental guide for Brave New World before viewing. Although this film is unrated, and was made for TV, it has various scenes depicting nudity and sexual behavior.
