Sociology Literacy Mat

This is a one page Powerpoint slide designed to be printed off as a full slide, laminated and kept on the desks in a classroom. It could also work as a display. It contains key terminology, explanations of command words, spelling guide, useful connectives for essay writing, golden rules etc. Predominantly for A-Level but could easily be used elsewhere. Also useful to give electronically to students.

The Race For Space

(0)
This looks at the early part of the Space Race. The links to the YouTube clips on the presentation are in the notes section. It’s pretty straightforward with discussion questions and written questions to complete. Perhaps use the Public Service Broadcasting song “Sputnik” as a starter.
Sampling

Sampling

We all know that Sampling is one of the most boring topics on any Sociology syllabus. Here are all the resources you’ll probably need to get through it at any post-16 course. It’s a dry topic but this covers all the bases I should think. All of it is pretty self-explanatory and tasks do lend themselves to linking to Methods in Context.

Sorting task just highlight in blue New Right policies, and in red the Social Democratic policies. Easy to use and then provoke discussion. Sheet to be filled in afterwards.
Welfare Spending

Welfare Spending

(0)
This is a task to indicate the difficulties of welfare spending in poorer countries. Print the sheet off and enlarge to A3. Give students a budget (i start off with 200 Billion) and let them spend. They have to spend incrementally, so if they want everything in one area it costs 55 Billion). After they have done this, slash the budget to 30 billion and do the same task.

These are some resources to develop knowledge and understanding of Life Chances. Specifically focused on IGCSE Sociology. The Life Chances cards should be used as a ranking activity.

Postmodernism and Pokemon GO!

(0)
A rather quite simple lesson teaching Postmodernist interpretations of the Media through Pokemon GO! Capitalise on the fad from a few years ago (Yr 13 students will no doubt remember it from earlier in the school). Get them to download it on their phones and tell them to go catch Pokemon for 15 minutes. See how they get on. Show some YouTube news clips about people getting into trouble, then read the texts and complete the table.

“Sirrrrrrrr… can you do us a thing with all the case studies in?” Erm… no. You can do it yourself. Should be handy for revision. Probably can be adapted for other subjects.
Marriage and Divorce Patterns

A load of resources plus two essay plans suitable for Marriage an Divorce patterns. Suitable for AS Sociology primarily, although some could be used for GCSE or IGCSE. Essay plans are for CIE but could easily be adapted.
Auteur Theory

Auteur Theory

I created this for Auteur theory. Works well with some of the other stuff on here, but this looks at applying the theory across different types of media. I have not used resources from a textbook to make this. Requires independent study.
