Radioambulante.org has many engaging story episodes about various people throughout Latin America. This episode tells the story of a fisherman lost at sea for 438 days who survived until he landed in the Marshall Islands. Episode is about 25 minutes long and is best suited for a Heritage Speakers or AP level class where students already have high levels of proficiency. Non native speaker classes will work better if you pause the program periodically and replay parts to ensure students understand. Download includes 20 questions for comprehension and two follow up questions for students to process after listening. Takes one class period to complete. This is one of the most compelling stories I have heard yet on Radio Ambulante and your students will certainly be engaged. Link to episode is at the top of the page for easy access and absent students who can listen at home on their phones. Answer key also included.

This short poem by Pablo Neruda focuses on how we create our own destiny and how we are responsible for our own successes and failures. Its a great poem to launch a unit on Neruda or to use with a level III or higher class where you are studying poetry. (Realidades 3, AP Lit) Lesson download includes a word version of the poem, quotes from poem for students to reflect upon and think/pair/share, an audio link to listen to the poem and a writing prompt. Lesson takes one class period to complete if you assign the writing prompt for homework. Poem is easy to understand and works well for students at level III or higher.

This project outlines the parameters for students to create their own fairy tale after studying the preterite vs the imperfect tense. Students have the choice of two formats, and project outline includes directions, required "buzz words", grading rubric and a list of useful vocabulary for writing fairy tales. This project works best at a level II or III class that has finished the study of the two past tenses and is a great way to assess for understanding in context.

These are simple step by step notes on how to tell time in Spanish. Each section has practice examples for students to write time on the hour, half hour, quarter hours and random in between times. Page two has blank clock faces where students can practice writing times you read to them, and there is a partner practice where students can ask and answer times in Spanish speaking capital cities. Four pages total to practice telling time reading, writing, listening and speaking. This lesson is best suited for students that are just beginning telling time, or for those students in 2nd year re-visiting the topic for a day to brush up their skills.

No rocket science here, but a great way for students to practice GUSTAR and related verbs in a differentiated way while acquiring vocabulary to describe their personal interests. This assignment works best for students in SPanish II who have reviewed usage of verbs like GUSTAR or for SPanish I students after the have already learned adjectives and basic regular verb conjugation. Students create an original poem about something they love and then present it to the class. Packet contains parameters of assignment, tips for students on composing their thoughts, revision/proofing code list for peer correction or teacher proofing and grading rubric. This lesson works well as a final assessment of GUSTAR or related verbs and students enjoy presenting their works out loud in a Poetry slam. Plan at least two days for creation and proofing, one day for final revision and 1-2 days to present depending on class size.
