Preterito o Imperfecto? Step by Step Powerpoint Practice with a Fable

(0)
This powerpoint tells the famous Aesop fable of the Lion and the Mouse. 25 blanks for students to decide preterite or imperfect alternate with slides that contain the answers and rationale for their choices. Students can practice a story together and discuss their choices prior to trying some of my other practice fables as worksheets for homework. Each slide contains 2-3 sentences and is immediately followed by the the answers. This powerpoint would work best early on in the preterite vs imperfect unit after students have been presented with the reasons/concepts for each verb tense. Provides an important step for "guided practice" to reduce frustrations and stimulate discussion before students practice on their own. Free preview file is the graphic organizer on blackline for students to track their answers and reasons.

You can teach your students all regular and irregular preterite verb conjugations through this rap song, and you will look hilarious. The lyrics accompany the old RAPPERS DELIGHT song by the Sugarhill Gang. Powerpoint will flash the lyrics on your smartboard so everyone can participate . You will need to download a karaoke version of this old school favourite at Amazon.com and rap out the lyrics as you teach them the verbs. Especially successful in the urban school I taught in as the students recognized the song their parents listened played at home. One of my students favourites!

What is Culture? Discussion, Activities, and Project

(1)
I use this activity to start my foreign language classes but it would work really well for ESL students, Social Studies or even a psychology course. Students examine components of culture, both surface and deep and discuss what makes up a person's culture. Small group brainstorming sessions interspaced with large group share outs and individual reflections on culture, social circles and deep vs surface. Project and reflection questions at the end for students to complete at home. This lesson takes at least one-two class periods to complete and is a great introduction to get them thinking about cultural differences and how people assimilate.

ODA A LA COMIDA: Food Poem Project

This lesson feeds well off of a unit on poetry where students are already familiar with poetic terminology. It can be used as a performance assessment. I use it after reading Oda a los Tomates by Pablo Neruda and showing some youtube clips of the poem to get the feeling for personification and imagery. It could also be used after a thematic unit on food and works best with Level III or higher students who are already familiar with locating poetry mechanisms in poetry. Lesson includes brainstorming chart, rough draft, finished product and rubric templates. Free preview contains additional comments and suggestions for implementation. The finished product from students on this lesson was some of the best most creative work I have seen this year, and students really enjoyed delivering their poems in a "Spoken Word" format in class. You will want to allow some class time to create rough drafts and avoid GOOGLE translated assignments.

Culturally Correct Quiz Activity

(0)
This lesson is designed to get students thinking about cultural "norms" and all the different ways good etiquette, customs and rituals are practiced around the world. There are 48 simple statements on a chart for students to ponder in small groups and then guess as to where these practices are considered the norm. Survey is written in English so it will work for teachers of any foreign language, as well as ELL classes. The survey will open up students minds for the wide variety of cultural diversity, and for ELL students give them an opportunity to share out cultural norms from their home countries. This activity would be excellent for the first day of school to open the dialogue and get students interacting. Download also includes an answer key for you to share with students afterwards.

Adjective Grid: Practice with Adjective Agreement and Nationalities

(0)
Two simple table charts for students to practice adjective agreement. One with a list of common adjectives, the other with a list of countries and their corresponding nationalities. No rocket science here, just a little extra practice for students who need it or for that text book that never seems to offer enough support for the concept. Works best for students at level I who are learning adjectives for the first time or level II beginning of year when they need a quick jump start review. Grid has some answers already in place to help students think about how each adjective works.
