The Great Smartie Investigation

A data handling investigation using Smarties.

Pupils will predict and estimate on:

• the number of Smarties in each tube.
• the colour of Smarties in each tube.
• the amount of each colour in each tube.

Pupils will then sort their tube of Smarties and answer questions based upon their predicitions, as well as drawing a bar chart to show what their tube of smarties had.

This resource allows children to conduct a practical experiment and then present the data they find in a bar chart. It also creates a good level of whole class discussion.

• PDF of the sheet children will use for the investigation
• PowerPoint to deliver lesson
• A set of statements which can be used to create a display of the investigation (I have done this with some photographs and then copies of the student’s work.
