TESTS for seven-year-olds in Wales have been scrapped. Children will not be tested at the end of key stage 1 next year. Teacher assessment remains statutory.
Welsh education minister Jane Davidson said the move, put forward in the White Paper, The Learning Country, would reduce the administrative burden on primary teachers and release more time for other classroom activities.
Wales has already dropped school league tables.
Edwyn Williams, general secretary of UCAC, the union for Welsh-speaking teachers, said: “We are pleased to see the Assembly putting trust in teachers’ professionalism.”
