The transition from one key stage to another can be daunting for children – especially if it involves starting at a new school or making new friends. Help build your child’s confidence over the summer holidays with these simple and engaging activities – they’ll keep their brain cells ticking over, and give you an idea of what to expect in September.

Moving from Early Years to primary school

Leaving the familiar surroundings of nursery to go to primary school can be a little overwhelming. This fantastic summer scrapbook gives children a great introduction to reception class – helping to explain what will happen when school starts, as well as providing a great talking point with new friends and teachers.

Plus, it doesn’t hurt to get started on some of the basics: familiarise your child with letters of the alphabet, or introduce some simple phonics. Each activity will help build your child’s literacy skills and make that transition into primary school easier.

And, the wonderful thing about these resources is – they’re fun! Why not spend a rainy afternoon discovering  popular spelling bee words? Or find out how you can bring maths into your daily life in an exciting and relevant way – you’d be surprised how easy (and enjoyable!) it can be.

Moving from primary to secondary school

The transition to ‘big school’ can feel like a big step for parents as well as children. But there are lots of exciting things you can do with your child to gear them up for the new academic year.

Kick off the summer holidays with this bumper pack of mazes, puzzles, crosswords and word searches – the perfect way to boost literacy and numeracy skills.

Or, for kids that crave variety and adventure, we’ve found 100 ideas to stave off boredom. Have fun brushing up on mental arithmetic on long journeys, or challenge the family to a selection of board games that develop numeracy skills.

Then, when you’re ready for some quiet time, check out these 100 writing prompts, or explore 48 reading activities in the summer reading challenge – you’ll find a range of tasks from redesigning a book cover to writing a book review, and everything in between.

Resources for summer learning

Welcome Booklet - Reception Class

The welcome booklet is given to children when they come to visit the Foundation classes in the Summer term, prior to starting our school in September. The children take the booklet home to share with parents over the summer holiday. I've taken out any photographs of children and replaced these with text boxes showing what photograph would have been there. We also give children a scrap book to fill over the summer holidays. We stick the 'sheet for scrapbook' on the inside cover, to give parents ideas of what kind of things the children could draw, write or stick into the book.

High Frequency Words Spelling Bee - Tasks that Promote Mastery of Early Common Words

There are 4 colourful presentations included in this pack of resources. They are intended for early writers and provide a solid base for teaching, demonstrating and gaining mastery of common words used most frequently by 5-7 year old writers.
Presentation 1 - High Frequency Words is intended for the introductory phase.
This presentation allows the teacher to:
a) read spelling words aloud to class or group
b) sound (where words are phonetically regular)
c) write (demonstrating letter formation)
on the interactive or smart board. Children can respond on their mini whiteboards.
Presentation 2 and 3 - HF words Tracing Tasks and Rainbow Writing Tasks provide further opportunities for the children to consolidate their common words spelling skills after the initial presentation.
Hopefully, the children will enjoy the varied tasks and most importantly revise these words in a fun way.
The final presentation is an assessment tool. It encourages the children to read, study , trace, cover and write the common words with a final sentence task.
These presentations are easily edited to include more complex common or topic words. The slides can be printed, laminated and used for carousel tasks. They can also be placed into a 'smart pals' folder ( clear plastic folder where worksheet goes inside) , Children can write on and wipe clean.
Very suitable for older children who require more support as part of a spelling intervention programme.
Totally versatile - enjoy with your young writers!
