This lesson is the first lesson introducing the new unit on Beliefs in Society. This is an interactive lesson, which introduces the class to the issue of defining religion. The lesson further explores; substantive, functional and social constructionist definitions of religion.

• To look into different definitions of religion (substantive, functional and social constructionist) and to understand the difficulties of defining religion for sociologists.
