This is a fully differentiated lessons looking at the character of Sherlock Holmes in the story The Speckled Band. The lesson introduces learners to the key concept of making inferences and how this can be applied to studying English. The lesson has many opportunities for AFL and helps to develop skills when responding to language questions. The PowerPoint includes a student example that works well to help learners to make a response to an exam-style question. This PowerPoint includes a range of fun and engaging icebreakers to help learners get to know each other and break through the tension of coming back to school. This recourse has opportunities for both individual and team games and also helps to develop key English skills such as making inferences and speaking and listening. The lesson helps learners to understand the differences between implicit and explicit information which is a key skill required for their GCSE’s. The lesson looks at one of the issues of Free School Meals during the Co-vid crisis and how this was overcome by the footballer Marcus Rasford.
