Students design and create Christmas cards as if they are a character from An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Blood Brothers or Animal Farm. English transition lesson for new Year 7 students that explores autobiographies and a specific extract from the autobiographer of footballer and pundit Ian Wright. We explore the key elements of an autobiography and evaluate how Wright uses these in an extract from his book. This lesson explores autobiographies and what an autobiography is, as part of a unit on the self and writing first person narratives. War poetry lesson that supports students to analyse In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. Students develop an understanding of the poppy as a symbol before transferring this to an analysis of the poem. We look at language and structure in detail, including how the poet adapts the form of a rondeau. A very useful lesson for Remembrance Day, as well as for both KS3 and KS4 students preparing for English Literature exams or unseen poetry.

Lord of the Flies introduction lesson that explores William Golding’s novel as Ralph and Piggy are first introduced. We learn about atomic bombs, the Manhattan Project and how this context influences our understanding of these new characters in Chapter 1 - The Sound of The Shell. Students analyse the two new characters, finding quotations to support their interpretations and making inferences based on their new understanding. Focussing on Stave Two and how Fezziwig is presented in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, we analyse key quotes around his character, decide on his central characteristics and explore the impact that he has on Ebenezer Scrooge as the main protagonist is allowed a chance to revisit his childhood. A fantastic lesson for students preparing for AQA English Literature and easily adaptable for other year groups as well.

A fully differentiated lesson that looks at a Paper 1-style AQA English Literature question (extract and question included) on A Christmas Carol and reviews the presentation of Scrooge as unsympathetic, the use of language in the extract and how the extract can be linked to historical context before students review their own answers and then self-assess each other’s work. As we look at A Midsummer Night’s Dream we look at how Bottom and the Mechnicals are introduced to the audience and analyse the types of characters they are through key quotes used in their first scene. We look at Shakespeare’s use of names and make predictions about how these characters will fit into the play later on, plus consider the generic and thematic importance of such characters for more able students. An Inspector Calls - a detailed lesson on the final scene of the play AFTER Inspector Goole has left. Blood Brothers lesson that explores Mrs Lyons’ jealously regarding Mrs Johnstone holding her baby, how Mrs Lyons manipulates Mrs Johnstone - particularly by using her sense of superstition, as well as how Mickey and Edward are introduced to us and how the two boys are different to each other in terms of appearance and behaviour but are immediately drawn to each other anyway. Focussing on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and in particular Stave Two, this lesson looks at how Fan and Belle are presented to the reader and their effects on the character of Scrooge - both as a young man and as an old one. We will look carefully at the use of language used to describe Scrooge and Belle’s meeting and analyse what Scrooge would be thinking when Belle ‘releases’ him from his engagement. A great lesson for KS4 students preparing for English Literature exams and easily adaptable for younger years as well.
