Simple but effective lesson.
Students practise using a combination of simple, compound and complex sentences within descriptive paragraphs using the power and conflict poems as inspiration for their writing.
Students then review their paragraph by exploring the impact of each sentence type.
To develop their paragraph further, students can add a wider variety of punctuation by responding to the 3 prompts.
Resource aimed at getting students to think more consciously about how they combine simple, compound and complex sentences within their sentences.
Students respond to each image by following the suggested order of simple, compound and complex sentences.
They can then review each paragraph to think about the function of each sentence type within the paragraph.
A free resource to use with low ability students.
Students are provided with 5 grade 3 level paragraphs on the poem Remains.
Students must extend the paragraphs by developing better inferences, zooming in to words/techniques or by zooming out to bigger ideas such as PTSD.

A grade 7 and a grade 8 slightly improved response to the following exam style question about Lady Macbeth. This is pretty similar to the May 2024 question but the featured extract was from Act 1 Scene 7 rather than Act 1 Scene 5.
Starting with this speech (Act 1 Scene 5 ‘The raven himself is hoarse’) explain how far you think Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a powerful woman.Write about:
• how Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth in this speech
• how Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth in the play as a whole.
Includes a grade 7 version and a grade 8 version for comparison. The grade 8 version has a more thoughtful introduction and conclusion and creates more of a debate.
The PowerPoint contains colour coded annotations to showcase a deliberate and easy to imitate method for helping students structure a successful response.
Also contains a grade 9 response analysing Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s marriage.
40 comprehension questions covering 8 poems.
Ideal to use as starters or as a knowledge mini test.
Includes an answer sheet.

A grade 8 model response comparing how conflict with nature is presented in Prelude and Storm on the Island.
I’d give it a mark at the top of Band 5 24/30 which I predict is around grade 8.
It is well-structured, thoughtful, detailed and developed with apt evidence.
To reach Grade 9 it needs to be more critical and exploratory with more convincing exploration of alternative interpretations and contectual factors.
I have many other Power and Conflict resources also on my shop such as the following:

A range of high grade Macbeth exam responses.
All responses were written to reflect the ability of grade 8/9 students working under timed conditions.
Marking is subjective but as an experienced examiner, I am confident all of these responses would, in my opinion, fit into the top band because all 6 contain thorough (and at times perceptive) debate with the nuances of the question supported by thorough and at times perceptive analysis of methods and wider ideas supported by fine-grained analysis of judicious quotations.
A handy worksheet to revise 50 carefully selected key quotations from Macbeth.
Task 1: Write a brief summary of each quotation.
Task 2: Colour code it by linking it to one of the 4 main themes.
Task 3: Identify a language feature in each quotation.
Also contains a random generator quotation revision activity.
I also offer a resource with all 50 quotations explained which can be viewed here:
