Example persuasive advertisement based on Chapter 9 of the children’s novel Stig of the Dump by Clive King. This exemplar advert persuading readers to visit Stone Henge is perfect to use as a WAGOLL when studying Chapter 9 of Stig of the Dump. The model advert text comes with a feature identification worksheet, plus an answer sheet that can be uploaded for remote learning or shared in class, enabling pupils to become confident in the genre before an independent or shared writing activity. After identifying features, pupils plan and write their own persuasive advert based on the exemplar. The pupils can link their advert to the novel Stig of the Dump by persuading their readers to visit the Kent standing stones, the Medway Megaliths, and to stay in Stig’s cave hotel, giving opportunities to describe settings from chapter 9 of the book. Two example diary entries from the point of view of Christophe from the children’s novel Christophe’s Story by Nicki Cornwell. These exemplar diary entries are perfect to use as WAGOLLs after reading Chapter 1 of the text. The first model diary entry comes with a feature find worksheet for children to fill in, plus answer sheet. This can be easily edited to vary the challenge level and provide differentiation. After identifying features, pupils can write their own diary entries based on the example texts. These could be from the point of view Christophe or from the point of view of other characters (for example, Jeremy, Greg, Miss Finch or Christophe’s father). An example action text inspired by the novel Oranges in No Man’s Land by Elizabeth Laird, plus feature find with answers and novel extract. Pupils will examine the exciting text extract from the refugee novel, looking for features of an action sequence. After highlighting features and noting examples of those features in a table, pupils will be introduced to an example text written from the point of view of a different character from the book. They can then write their own action text. The action sequence extract is taken from chapters 13 and 14, when Ayesha is taken back across Beirut’s Green Line by Abu Bashir in a United Nations’ ambulance. The model text is written from Abu Bashir’s perspective instead of Ayesha’s. This text can be used as a WAGOLL for writing. A word bank of 35 common contractions and their full forms. This word list is a useful resource for pupils who are learning about apostrophes and as a word mat when writing non-fiction genres such as diary entries, informal letters and other informal texts, as well as fiction writing, especially dialogue. Contractions are words that are made by combining two words together but omitting some letters and replacing these with apostrophes. Each set of words is presented above the shortened form with its apostrophe for omission. The word bank can be printed onto A4 to be used as a handy desk-top resource or enlarged onto A3 paper and displayed on the wall of your classroom. Pupils practise changing direct speech to reported speech using these differentiated worksheets based on events from the refugee novel Oranges in No Man’s Land by Elizabeth Laird. A conversation from Chapter 8 of the novel, when Ayesha escapes from the militiamen with the help of the mysterious old man Abu Boutros, must be changed from direct to reported speech. Direct speech is speech which is reported by using the exact words that the speaker used and includes the use of inverted commas (otherwise known as speech marks or quotation marks). Reported speech (otherwise known as indirect speech) tells you what someone said but does not use the person’s actual words. Example newspaper report based on the events of chapters 9 to 14 of the children’s novel The Twits by Roald Dahl when Mrs Twit is tricked into thinking she has the shrinks and is then stretched by Mr Twit and floats into the air. This exemplar newspaper article is perfect to use as a WAGOLL to examine the features of a newspaper report. The model report comes with a feature find worksheet with answers. After identifying the features, pupils can write their own report based on the example text by either re-writing the model text, choosing a different event from The Twits or inventing their own incident for the Twits to be involved in. Two activities involving identifying correctly and incorrectly punctuated possessive nouns. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the apostrophes have been put in the correct place for a variety of possessive nouns. There are two activities provided: ✽ Apostrophes in Possessive Nouns Cards/Quiz: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz. ✽ Apostrophes in Possessive Nouns Worksheet: pupils identify whether the apostrophes are correctly punctuating the possessive nouns, and then make any necessary corrections; identify possession as singular, regular plural and irregular plural; add missing apostrophes to sentences and write a paragraph including their own possessive nouns. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz. Get your pupils analysing the characters from The Twits using these differentiated FAST activities. These resources enable pupils to carry out a detailed character analysis. Using the F.A.S.T. technique, pupils will examine the Feelings, Actions, Sayings and Thoughts of Mr and Mrs Twit and other characters from Roald Dahl’s popular novel The Twits to gain an insight into the characters and develop inference skills. Pupils will look at the following categories: F = Feelings: How does the character feel? A = Actions: What does the character do? S = Sayings: What does the character say? T = Thoughts: What does the character think?
