Pupils examine the personalities of Chaya, Neel and Nour in this character trait matching exercise. Pupils match the names of the three main characters from The Girl Who Stole An Elephant by Nizrana Farook with character traits, evidence from the text, and an explanation (PEE). The quotes from the text have been provided, character traits with definitions, alongside the explanations. This resource has been differentiated three ways: • Higher ability: 9 quotes, character traits and explanations have been provided. • Middle ability: 9 quotes, character traits with definitions and explanations have been provided. • Lower ability: 9 character traits with definitions and explanations have been provided. This activity is a great way for pupils to think carefully about how a character’s personality is revealed by what they do and how they react in a story. This gives pupils an opportunity to use their inference skills and familiarises pupils with Point, Evidence and Explanation. All quotes are taken from chapters 1-16 of the adventure story. Answer sheets have also been included. After the matching activity, pupils plan and write a character profile using the writing template provided. Pupils sort notes about the Chinese Lung Dragon into categories for a non-chronological report. They then use these categorised notes to write their own non-chronological report about the Chinese Lung Dragon. This can be incorporated into study of the Chinese New Year. Pupils enjoy reading and sorting the 30 facts about the lung dragon. This engaging activity can be done individually or in pairs. The following resources are provided: • Uncategorised notes about the Chinese Lung Dragon • Worksheet with grid • Answer sheet Differentiation The task is differentiated three ways. It is made less complex with a simplified list with only 20 facts and a simplified grid with fewer categories. It is made more complex with a grid without headings (pupils must decide their own). All differentiated sheets have been provided. This resource works well with the example non-chronological report about the Knucker Dragon, to provide an exemplar for children’s own report writing.
