Four worksheets aimed at learning how to accurately punctuate direct speech. The worksheets are differentiated to cover a range of difficulty levels. The speech punctuation used includes inverted commas (speech marks), capital letters, commas and end of sentence punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks or question marks). Different formats of direct speech are given as examples with the reporting clause in different positions, including: • The reporting clause before the direct speech • The reporting clause after the direct speech • Two or more sentences of direct speech together • The reporting clause separating one sentence of direct speech • The reporting clause separating two sentences of direct speech A variety of verbs are used in the reporting clauses instead of ‘said’. The worksheets can be completed independently or in pairs. The worksheets are themed around a variety of traditional tales, but knowledge of the stories is not necessary to complete the activities. Glossaries for the novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, with definitions of nearly 300 words and over 100 accompanying images. Included: • 32 page glossary for the whole novel • 5 separate glossaries for each chapter The glossaries are organised into alphabetical order, encourging the use of dictionary skills which is a key component of the Key Stage Two curriculum for Years 3 and 4 (using dictionaries to check the meaning of words that they have read) and Years 5 and 6 (use dictionaries to check the spelling and meaning of words). The dictionary of key vocabulary helps pupils of all abilities, including SEN and EAL pupils, with their comprehension of the story. Pupils will learn how to write an exciting action sequence with this The Hodgeheg themed example text, together with a feature find and answers, boxing up grid, differentiated planning sheets and text extract. Pupils start by reading the action writing extract from the children’s book The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith. The structure is then examined using the boxing up method. A new text is planned by modelling the innovation (completed grid provided). Next pupils will analyse the example text using the feature find grid (answers provided) where they will need to find examples of listed action sequence grammar and language features. Lastly, pupils will plan their own action sequence using the differentiated planning grids and then write their own action sequence.
