A punctuation mark matching activity with three levels of differentiation.
Pupils match each card showing a punctuation mark symbol with an explanation of its use and an example sentence or sentences.
An answer sheet is included.
This activity helps pupils to remember the names of punctuation marks and how they are used. It can be used when introducing new punctuation marks to a class in lower key stage two or as a revision activity for upper key stage two (or even KS3). This activity is ideal as a starter or plenary for an English/literacy lesson or punctuation lesson.
The cards have been differentiated three ways:
• Lower ability: example sentences display the featured punctuation in red
• Middle ability: featured punctuation is missing with its position indicated by a red rectangle
• Higher ability: featured punctuation is missing

Two activities involving identifying correctly and incorrectly punctuated direct speech. Pupils must look carefully at the direct speech to check if the correct punctuation has been used and if it is all in the correct place.
There are two activities provided:
• Direct Speech Punctuation Cards: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz.
• Direct Speech Punctuation Worksheet: pupils identify whether the speech has been correctly or incorrectly punctuated and then make any necessary corrections. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz.
The speech punctuation used includes inverted commas (speech marks), capital letters, commas and end of sentence punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks or question marks).
Different formats of direct speech are given as examples with the reporting clause in different positions, including:
• The reporting clause before the direct speech
• The reporting clause after the direct speech
• Two or more sentences of direct speech together
• The reporting clause separating one sentence of direct speech
• The reporting clause separating two sentences of direct speech
A variety of verbs are used in the reporting clauses instead of ‘said’.
Answers to all tasks are included.

An example diary text based on chapters 1 to 6 of the bookFlat Stanley: The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery by S. Pennypacker and created by Jeff Brown. The WAGOLL text comes with feature find worksheets and answers, differentiated planning templates and word bank.
The diary entry is written from Stanley’s point of view on his first day in Egypt.
The exemplar text can be used as a WAGOLL diary text to examine before pupils plan and write their own diary entry based on the same events or the next few chapters.

Fronted adverbial worksheets based on the first two chapters of the book Flat Stanley: The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery by S. Pennypacker and created by Jeff Brown.
These three differentiated worksheets contain a variety of fronted adverbial activities to develop pupils’ knowledge of fronted adverbials and improve their skills in using fronted adverbials in their writing. Pupils are asked to identify different types of fronted adverbials, re-write sentences to include fronted adverbials and commas, and write their own sentences with fronted adverbials including correct punctuation.
Each sheet comes with its own answer key.
