A colourful, super clear powerpoint (52 slides) that takes students through the reading paper for Edexcel GCSE Language Paper 2. The powerpoint is really detailed and it takes me two hours to teach it to a class, especially if I ask them to write every answer. Activities are very structured to allow all students to be able to access the questions. I have included indicative content, sample paragraphs, and part answers to model how to get the maximum marks. The texts used are accessible and engaging: Orwell’s account of shooting an elephant and an extract from the autobiography of the head keeper of London Zoo in 1898. The powerpoint is excellent preparation for mocks but could also be used for Year 9 students beginning on their pathway to GCSE.

It is best used for revision or once the students have finished reading the novel. There are discussion points, activities to test knowledge of the novel and opportunities to analyse language. Context is also fully covered. The lesson ends with an extract question suitable for the AQA exam but easily adapted for Eduqas or Edexcel. There is also a really detailed plan which illustrates how to write a top-level essay. This lesson worked very well with my year 11 students who went on to write excellent essays on this theme.
