This is based on something I saw on the TES a while ago, but I couldn't find it again! The pupils have to plan flights on various continents using Bearings to work out the direction of travel, and Speed, Distance and Time calculations. This is a better version of something I uploaded onto here a while ago. Pupils have to use probability, the cost of playing a game and prize money to determine whether fairground games are worth playing or not. Inspired by some UKMT questions, I made a lesson showing students how they can apply their knowledge of graphs to help with some geometry problems. Students see how placing a set of axes on a geometrical picture can help with changing the problem into an algebraic one instead. Ideally this lesson would come after doing some lessons on straight line graphs (the starter contains reminders of things they will need to be able to do to access it). This is a lesson we do near the start of the year with our Year 7 pupils. The idea is to get them thinking as much as possible about how they can improve, rather than whether they are good or not, which is a common problem in Maths. The video explains things very well and there is a short activity on rewording your thoughts. This lesson is most effective when you refer back to it during the year when giving feedback or when you sense the 'fixed mindset' coming back. As with Chris Smith's group challenges, we have also built his Maths relays (https://www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/maths-relay-races-problem-solving-puzzles-6064073) into our Y7 scheme of work. They have proven to be very popular with the pupils, and we therefore needed some for Y8 as well - so I made some! The instructions give a few ideas that make these run more smoothly! Pupils imagine they are a secret agent. They have to get across each map without being detected by guards or security cameras. To do this they construct Loci to show which areas are safe and which aren't. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! IMPORTANT NOTE: When the pupils start the task, say that the task is to show the areas which are UNSAFE. If you say they need to find a safe route through, they will all just estimate it without using the Loci!

Pupils have to split shapes into congruent pairs by drawing lines on them. Makes teaching congruency more interesting and there is an extension activity for more investigation. Each of these documents contains 30 puzzles which I have used over 3 academic years as 'puzzle of the week&'. I have a folder on the wall and pupils help themselves to printouts and they hand them into a box in my room, receiving merits for correct answers. All you need for an investigation into Pick's theorem, linking the dots on the perimeter of a shape and the dots inside it to it's area (when drawn on square dotty paper!) You will need to write on a few of the slides. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on TES! :)

Pupils investigate what happens when the increase one of the dimensions of a cuboid by 1 unit repeatedly, and plot their results on a graph. They then try to explain their findings. Can be extended to Surface Area as well. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on TES! :)

Pupils use angles and a bit of proportional reasoning to work out where some of the planets will be at a given time. They draw lines between them and if done accurately will end up with some lovely pursuit curves. Includes a plenary involving pi in case they have covered it as well! Improved version of an older resource of mine. Pupils are shown some simple graphs (horizontal, vertical, and diagonals based on y = x and y = -x), and have to try and use these graphs to create shapes. It is essential that pupils always label their lines and for the plenaries they can share some of their answers on the board. Quite a varied selection of Diagrams for pupils to try and interpret and draw conclusions from. A bit more interesting than the standard Bar/Line/Pie Chart or Pictogram lesson! A nice little investigation into which numbers are happy and which are unhappy. Pupils will end up with a reflected pattern in their grid and as an extension you can ask them to try and draw flow diagrams (I have referenced the source for these (davecavill - also on the TES site) in the powerpoint itself!)
