A full lesson detailing how to analyse persuasive writing. Ideal for English Language paper 1 Suitable for HA KS3 classes and KS4. A recently observed Ofsted 'Outstanding' lesson, with a clear lesson plan showing detailed differentiation. Suitable for all exam boards but designed for Edexcel English Language Specification (also attached) and grade boundaries from 3-6, which can be altered easily to accommodate HA or LA pupils. Objectives as below (fits some of AO2/AO4 criteria too). Objectives AO1: Grade 3: Identify a selection of persuasive language techniques. Grade 4: Make some comment on a persuasive language technique. Grade 5: Discuss the effect of a selection of persuasive language techniques. A clear and easy to follow baseline for pupils in KS3 and KS4. Features a short extract from 'The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas' and 3 comprehension activities designed to text student ability to retrieve information, identify language features and discuss the effect of individual words and phrases on the reader. There is then the choice of two imaginative writing tasks. The paper is essentially a miniature and more widely accessible version of the GCSE English Language paper pupils will sit at the end of KS4.

A lesson detailing to pupils how to identify the features of an advert (linguistic and format) and recreate these in a writing task, based on the Edexcel English Language exam. Suitable for KS3 classes and KS4. A recently observed Ofsted 'Outstanding' lesson, with a clear presentation and attached worksheets. The main activity consists of a pupil led analysis of a series of adverts (designed to cover a range of language and structural features), an original writing task and finally the plenary consists of a peer assessment task (worksheet for this is attached). A fast-paced, pupil-led lesson with varied activities and integrated (graded) peer assessment. Worksheets are provided for differentiation of the task and a full lesson plan shows details of all activities (although the PPT is very straightforward anyway).

A recently observed Ofsted 'Outstanding' lesson. Objective (A03): Grade 3: Make obvious point of comparison. Make simple comments on writers’ ideas and view points. Level 4: As above and makes some specific references to theme, language and structure. Level 5: Discusses a range of comparisons in some detail. Explains the writers’ ideas and viewpoints with quotations to support. Pupils complete a series of activities to build a framework to asses both poems. They then complete an analysis framework sheet and a series of P.E.E paragraphs (with a support sheet for LA pupils).
