Using ‘Retrieval Practice’, pupils who regularly perform this test against the clock not only increase their attainment level but also increase their ability to rapidly recall the 12 times tables facts. This is a great tool for implementing retrieval practice in the classroom
Used regularly you will see the impact on the pupils ability to rapidly recall the facts
For lower ability pupils doing addition bonds, I model how to place the larger digit in their head and to count on. Initially they will need support and exposure to the facts in approx 30 minutes per session. Over the weeks you will start to see more questions answered at a greater speed, as well as, some retrieval from memory. the longer it is in place the more retrieval occurs. I have seen pupils who started with less than 10 in 20 minutes, end up with 100 in 4 minutes.
For subtraction I teach the pupils how to efficiently use their addition bonds to calculate the difference. This reduces the need to learn so many facts.
