Flight Paper Plane Experiments Interactive Notebook Visual Aid KS2

Paper planes are fun to make and fly, so they make a great activity for learning about the science behind flight. This pack contains experiments that illustrate the forces of flight in action, and an interactive visual aid so students can see the forces that act on a plane in a hands-on way. These activities are cross-curricular as measurement skills are used to record how far the planes fly, and students determine the best unit of measurement. For younger students, the experiment asks them to record distance using their steps. Teaching points are included along with recommended websites to help explain the concepts. What’s included? Experiment for younger students: use a light and strong throw to see how it affects the distance the plane flies (measuring using their steps) Experiment to plan and carry out a test to show how wings are needed to create lift, and how thrust is needed to make a plane move Experiment to show how the strength of a throw affects the distance, and use observations and measurements to predict what would happen with more throws Experiment to show how drag/air resistance affects a plane with and without flaps Visual directions to make a simple dart airplane, but students may know other designs they could use Interactive notebook activity, visual directions Teaching points Useful websites U.K and U.S versions included Editable version (text is editable, images/layout aren’t) 15 pages included. If you’re studying ancient Greece, this 3D paper model will bring your topic to life. This is a hands-on project ideal for year 3 and above, using materials that are easily available. You can differentiate with the craft by using the smaller, easier version or the larger, more challenging version. The smaller size is 3.5in x 3in and the larger size is about 4in x 7in. The smaller size has three pieces to join, and you can simplify this further by leaving out the steps. The larger version has five pieces to join, so is more challenging and great for older children. Ideas for use: Students could colour it first, or make it as it is. You could also get students to add a modern twist or any other details to make it unique. Use as part of an ancient Greece study Use when learning about famous buildings around the world Use it as a hands-on activity for early finishers, golden time, GATE, or similar You will need: paper glue sticks white glue double-sided tape (optional) scissors colouring pencils (optional) What’s included? 2 pages of outlines for the smaller version (with or without steps) 4 pages of outlines for the larger size PDF slideshow of instructions to show on a screen Student handout of instructions U.K and U.S versions 18 pages in total Please note this model is not to scale and is an artistic representation, not a realistic representation. 3D crafts can be challenging so please consider if your students have the fine motor skills needed before purchasing. Children often find it hard to remember the difference between area and perimeter, which affects their ability to do calculations correctly. So, the more memory aids we can use to help them, the more likely it is that they will remember the difference. With this activity, children color in the word “AREA” which covers the area of the rectangle, and they write the word “PERIMETER” around the perimeter of the rectangle. I’ve included a full page and half page option. You may also like an engaging, real-world activity like this one to practise area and perimeter.
