Materials and Their Properties: Outdoor STEM Activity - Permeability
Your students are set with the challenge to save Eddie who is ship wrecked on a desert island. They will need to research and create a water catching device using only natural materials and some tape.
Your class will research the permeability of different natural materials to find out which material will be best to make their water catchers out of. They will then design and create their water catchers before putting it to the test and seeing which catcher can collect the most water and save Eddie!
After researching, designing, building, and testing, they will then evaluate their designs and teamwork, looking at what went well and what they could have done to improve it. This activity is best done in mixed ability groups of 2 or 3.

British Tree Identification Guide
A simple guide for your students to identify common British trees. For each tree it shows a picture of the tree, its’ leaves, and seeds. Laminate these sheets and use the time and time again. Equally, leave them in your outdoor space for students to use as this wish while exploring the world around them.

Floating and Sinking Outdoor Challenge
For this activity students are challenged to make the same object both sink and float, encouraging them to think about why objects either sink or float, and then how it is possible that the same object can be made to both sink and float.
This resource has two differentiated results sheets and questions:
Diff. 1 – A simple question about the properties of items that sunk.
**Diff. 2 – **A question to encourage critical thinking about how it is possible the same object can be made to both sink and float.
A great follow up activity is to get your class to design and build a paper boat, seeing which boat is able to carry the most cargo without sinking.

This pack contains four differentiated worksheets where your class will get loads of practise at working out 10 more and less as part of their addition and subtraction unit. These sheets are designed to be very visual with the use of base-ten images. For children who need more support you can provide them with base-ten apparatus or similar to help them physically see what’s happening to the numbers as they add and take away 10.

This continents student research booklet is a great project for students to carry out research on all 7 continents (Asia, Africa, Antartica, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America), creating a page for each where they’ll research the population, size, number of countries as well as some fun facts. There’s also space for a picture at the top of beach continent page. It’s perfect as a personal project or extension activity if you’re looking at continents
This pack comes in both color and black and white as well as a blank template.
To create the booklet, cut each A4 page in half, hole punch the top corner, and use some string or treasury tags to hold them together.

More or Less Addition and Subtraction Board Game: Years 1 - 2
This board game is great fun and will give your class tons of practise looking at 1 more or less, 10 more or less, as well as some bigger numbers for an extra challenge.
It’s a no-prep game (all you need is dice and counters) which can be played with 2 or more players. I have used this resource very successfully as a lesson however I now keep a pile at the back of the classroom that children can use as an extension activity or treat (they love it that much!).

Forces and Motion: The Lever Challenge - Outdoor STEM
For this activity students will be set the challenge to lift their partner off the ground without touching them using a set of materials provided. The idea is that they’ll create some kind of lever so they can stand on one side of the plank of wood and lift their partner on the other.
Our suggested teaching structure:
Planning sheet: 15 mins Building their lifting device: 20 mins Evaluation sheet: 15 mins This activity works best if students are left to produce their own designs and figure things out for themselves, however if by the end of the session, not all the students have figured out how to lift their classmate by using a lever, get some students to demonstrate and begin to explain how it works.

Addition Dice Game: Years 1 and 2
This is a fun addition dice game for grades K - 1 to practise addition either mentally or using visual aids to help. Children will roll dice either 2, 3 or 4 times (depending on ability) and add them together. You can set different challenges each time (highest total score, lowest total score, quickest to complete, etc.).
This activity is a great lesson, but is also perfect as a fun extension activity.
